Don't handicap yourself

Did you know that you’re allowed to use Openings books and game databases for Online chess?

From chess.com’s “What are the rules for playing”

Openings books and game databases may be consulted for Online (correspondence-style) Chess only

You are handicapping yourself if you don’t take advantage of these tools for your Online chess games.  Note:  These tools are prohibited for Live chess.  And, of course, chess engines are always prohibited.

Most of us aren’t chess masters.  There are way too many basic openings for the average user to memorize.  After the first couple of moves in your Online chess game, consult a game database.  See what top players play.  Review notable games from various openings.  Then you can develop a plan of attack for your game.

I use chessgames.com.  It’s free but you have to pay if you want to go further than four moves deep in the game database.
