After giving up your #1 and #3, you don't expect too much. Angelo didn't see the guy he wanted, so moving down from the 2nd to 3rd round, picked up an additional 4th. Knowing Angelo's track record, he is going to target "value" guys...fellas that slip or have an injury bug. DT Gilbert looks like one heck of an athlete (6-5, 290 and ya gotta check out his utube video of leaping out of a pool). He was rated by ESPN as the #1 pass rush DT. Iglesias has that big receiver look (6-1, 210), but also has that classic big receiver lack of speed. I like his hands and the job he did for OU. The Melton pick at the top of the 4th puzzled me (DE 6-3,280). This guy was a slider because of a DUI. I could be wrong, but this guy has bust written all over him...maybe it was with all that talent on the Texas line, he just doesn't show up.
Draft Grade
DJ Moore was a player many thought had first round ability, but size had him sliding down. Solid low risk, high reward pick...much like Vasher. I loved Vasher in college and this kid will be at least a solid backup/nickel guy. I could not believe J.Knox was on the board in the fifth round. This double shot of wr's reminds me of the '99 draft when the Bears took Bates and Booker in the 3rd round. If either Iglesias or Knox become starters and contributors, this draft could be a home run. OLB Freeman is another injury slider. If he can become a solid backup, Angelo will have done well. S Afalava looks like a special teamer to me...a tad too slow, but what a hitter. When you watched OSU, this was the guy always bringing the hammer. Very similar to K.Payne.
The guy who I have never heard of but looks like a FREAK is this G Lance Louis...this guy ran a 4.68! 6-3, 303 and ran a frickin' 4.68! He was a TE and outgrew the position. The Bears ran him through drills as a FB and Run blocker TE. Honestly, this guy could drop 10-25 pounds and be our Kleinsasser...I LOVE IT. WR Kinder was taken at the end of the 7th. I don't remember much about this guy. After the draft, the Bears signed WR Peterman (NW), S Deleston (UConn-the hot school this draft) and LB M.Rivera (Kansas...not sure if he is related our former DC and LB Rivera).
Final Grade: B (if we could have nailed a serious S prospect, I would have given a B+).
you pretty much summed it all up, lol.
i would give them a B i was impressed with their picks
and cant wait for the season to start!!
see, on one hand i agree with you about the bust thing, but maybe, just like sportswriters, the DUI is clouding some people's judgement. the kid's a stud, and if Lovie keeps him in check (more than likely he will), he might be a pro-bowler in two or three seasons...
to me knox & vance are the key too this draft , if both stay i'll give it an a+cause remember we got cutler.
Grunt, I agree that the DUI thing, especially with kids can be overblown. The bust factor to me (if there is such as thing as a 4th round bust) is from the lack of playing time at DE for Melton. He has size, but where is the speed (5.0 40yd)? One analyst said that Melton was one of the few DE prospects in this draft. If you want a larger, slower blocker-eater in a 3-4, maybe Melton is the guy...but the Bears don't play a 3-4. I think Angelo brought in some "pushers" on the D-line to motivate the bodies there. Maybe he thinks Marinelli (new D-line coach, formerly of the winless Lions) is going to turn this bunch into qb seeking missiles...I don't see it. Marinelli succeeded by getting the most out of guys like Sapp and Rice. Now Harris has just as much talent as Sapp...and may be quicker, but we don't possess a Rice type (unless someone can light a fire and get Anderson to produce up to his ability...I don't think that will happen either, the guy has turned into a one-trick pony). On the other hand, I think Gilbert is going to take Dvorcek's job. Maybe Angelo can get a pick for him in a trade.
DJ played high school ball at my alma mater Broome High.He was worth the price of admission just to watch him.I hope he fits in well with the Bears.Good cover skills and seems to always be around the football.Only thing I see lacking is a mean streak.
I think they did alright and at least are taking off their gloves for a change when it comes to offseason moves. The highly out of the ordinary move with Cutler makes me believe that they are serious about a Superbowl. I never thought in a million years they would open up their bank accounts and make a deal for a real quarterback. I think the move dictated the majority of the draft´s energy for the Bears. In the end, I don´t get too excited about draft picks until I see them on the field helping the team to win games.
I totally agree with torchmonkey about Dvorcek getting the boot. He seems like a great guy and I think that is about the only thing getting him this far. He´s always been injured and I don´t remember a game where I saw him be a playmaker.
