En Passant Points

Hi.

I've been thinking about this for some time, and I think the points awarded for an En Passant capture after promotion should be changed. Here's what I'm talking about:

Notice how the points are awarded as if the captured yellow piece was a king (three points). However, in the nature of En Passant, I believe the points should reflect a captured pawn instead. That may seem odd, because the piece removed from play was a king, so please allow me to explain.

The En Passant move is, of course, a special move for a pawn to capture another pawn which has just moved two spaces instead of one. The move was added to the game of chess at the same time pawns were given the ability to move two squares on their first move, and it was added as a counter, to prevent a player from avoiding the possibility of capture by utilizing the two-square move. The name of the move itself, "En Passant," literally translated from the French, means "In Passing," and its function is that a player can capture a pawn that has just moved two squares as if it had only moved one.

I therefore believe its in the spirit of the En Passant move to award points as if the captured pawn had only moved one square instead of two. In the case of promotion, that would mean that a capture of that piece would act as a pawn capture instead. In the example above, this would mean that I should only receive one point for the pawn, not three points for the king.

Sure it does! I've played many games which were decided by only one or two points. Also think of the impact on play. If this rule was implemented, I'd be less likely to make the capture in my example. I'd be giving up a three-point king for a one-point pawn instead of an even trade. It's not as extreme, but think of all the times players treat a one-point queen differently than their nine-point counterparts.

2 points is not 8, though

I think the points depend on what you capture plus one point.

hmmm i dunno i dont think it makes much of a differnece because it rarely happens

This detail is only when promotion on the 4th rank is activated. I think that the points is correct as that pawn turned into a king. Although i understand what you are saying that en passant is when a pawn takes another pawn (1 point value). The fact is, in that variant the 4th rank promotion is activated thus giving the value of the promoted piece. Maybe we can add an option where we can disable this?? @spacebar @GDII is this something that needs to be considered?

I'd prefer we remain it as it is. Suppose you promoted a pawn to an Amazon, checkmating someone, and another player did the e.p. move and only got 1 point. Doesn't sound fair to me.

Also you can change the pawn starting rank now, which makes e.p. on other ranks possible.

I agree with @grable, en passant is supposed to capture the pawn as if it only moved one square, which is not the case currently. As for promoting into another piece and checkmating someone, it's the checkmate mechanic that's unfair.

Solution: get rid of checkmating, pawns, and capturing

so basically get rid of chess?

@Typewriter44 this is getting off topic, but removing checkmates would suffice, let kings be captured like all the other pieces.

Just disable en passent
