Ever used Chess Opening Trainer?

Hi all! Do you have any experience with Chess Opening Trainer

This application looks pretty cool, because it lets you create your own opening books. Given you can import from PGN files, I was planning to use the excellent PGNs that my coach is giving me to create the books and practice them.

I know that it is key to learn the concept behind the moves in the opening (which is what I am doing), but some practice cannot harm, right?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Andrea

I am looking forward to the full review of COT. A lot of people seem to enjoy the software.

For now I have downloaded the 7 days trial and created one book using one of the PGN from Valeri - so far so good! Will post something more later this week!

Andrea, Here is another tool that looks ok (and free!)

No, that's a new one to me. I've used Chess Opening Wizard (the most popular commercial product) and Chess Position Trainer (free). I generally focus on understanding but I use these to refresh my memory a day or two before big tournaments.

Man, you rock - this seems 10 times better than the previous one, plus it's free! Surprised

Tonight (hoping my daughter will fall asleep soon enough) I will give it a try and report back.

Thanks again!

I will check out the new software but I have used COT for a while. I like to use Chessbase and create a set that I want to learn. i.e. the Vienna. I collect them, export the pgn, then import into COT. It then allows me to practice the openings and common variations for what ever # of moves I want. I generally use 10 as a start.

I will let you know what I think about the other one shortly.

Yesterday night I have been playing a bit with Chess Opening Trainer, the freeware tool proposed by Farbror.

First feedback is extremely positive: it has a very neat interface, very powerful options and the training options just rock, in my opinion.

Definitely worth a look!

Thanks again for the tip, Farbror!
