Yeah sandbagging of ratings has been around since I was a teenager in the 70s. People sinking otb rating on purpose so they could win ten bucks in a Sunday quad LOL. To be fair ten bucks was worth a lot more back then ...

ah ok, so does Chess.com basically just reverse all of the games from an account that was closed for FPV even if the other games didn't necessarily (directly) result in the closure?

This isn't going to be common. We limit account cycling and while we occasionally have people close accounts and then request access later with a new account, it's pretty rare.

In general, points are refunded base on the pools fair play violations occurred in, up to some time limits.

 

For US Chess games on accounts are closed, the only ones that get modified are those where it is determined those games had cheating.

I don’t understand the purpose of sandbagging games. One deliberately throws games to get a lower rating in order to win a U 1400 tournament and get an internet gold medal? What honor is there in that? The object is to get your rating as high a possible, come what may.

@HansSchmendrick They do it in order to increase (or at least protect) their USCF rating, and not be forced to play significantly higher rated players in USCF rated tournaments. I've heard many people complain about being 1500 or 1600 and being forced to play in the Open Section of a tournament here on Chess.com. So to avoid this, they just drive down their  Chess.com rating, so they can play in the U1450 Section of the Tournaments. Of course there is no honor in it, but there's no honor in winning when cheating, but as we know that doesn't stop people from doing it.
