I think you played a worse line. Better response to 2... dxc4 is 3, e3. Not e4.

If you play e4, black has a great move e5. Then you can't bxc4 take back the pawn, because black has Qxd4 to win a pawn and control the center.

If you don't take the pawn back, your gambit will make no sense. For example, if you play nf3, black will exd5 and you'll be two pawns down. You can now bxc4 take back a pawn, but after black nc6 you have no positional advantage and is still one pawn down.

That's why you should play e3 instead of e4, because black will no longer have the counter attack of e5. More, e3 will leave the white diagonal line open for white Queen. So if black fall into the trap, black will lose material immediately, as this:

I hope this helps.

you actually played the line wrong. Correct response to 2... dxc4 is 3, e3. Not e4.

Or

you can't play chess gambling that your opponent will not play the best moves.

If you will ever advance to 1400+ level, you'll find suddenly everybody is playing the correct line, and you'll be doomed.

iAmThunderLion

The second one you sent is helpful though

Please don't. Czech defense is so annoying. JK, do whatever you want happy.png

I like Italian as white and classical kings' pawn as white.

Hmm. I’ve been playing Queens Gambit for a while now and play e4 against the accepted. To be fair it is technically a gambit, so if you end up down a pawn with extra development that isn’t unusual at all. I don’t love moves like e3 or e6 that block out my bishop in general, but should I start playing the e3 line instead?

GoldenFlicker

I'm not up on the latest theory of the Q's Gambit, but I think 1 d4 d5 2 c4 dc4 3 e4 is still playable. As noted above, it generally is a true gambit line. I doubt that it is the best try for a theoretical edge in the opening, but I don't think it has been refuted.
