Checkmate occurs when a king is in check and has no legal moves to escape check. After the solution move is played, the yellow king is put in check, meaning that it is attacked by a piece of an opponent. The yellow player has no way to escape this check, because they cannot block the check, they cannot take the piece that is checking, and their king cannot move to a square that is not being attacked. Therefore, after blue's move, yellow is in checkmate, so they are mated.
Green to move, can you find a nice but difficult to find move that puts green in a winning position? (Hint: Discovery)
