A system where only first gains rank might help with teaming, but it would also drastically change the current meta. Personally, I don't team, but I do try to gain a consistent safe 2nd place every game, rather than shooting for 1st. If you take away the conservative players like me, games will become either of blood bath, or ultra conservative with everyone just moving pieces back and forth waiting for someone else to make the first move.
Yeah, I think that only first gets ranking isn't really a good idea, because players who get 2nd place should also be rewarded. When players start teaming up on FFA, I think it would be reasonable to report them.

I have just been involved in 4 player chess but can't information on "1 | 7 FFA". Can someone explain what it means?
Erm that seems a bit contradictory so are you saying in some simple way that you start off with a minute which can be affected by the speed you move when it's your turn?. Consequently the more you end up taking 8 seconds or more to move, the more likely you are to lose time?
if you really want to avoid this situation, in my opinion the best way is make system where only first gain ranking
