FIDE CM Requirements

The only requirements for the (FIDE) CM title is a 2200 rating without requiring any norms, however I notice that many players (particularly older players) have reached the 2200 rating threshold many years ago but have since dropped down to lower ratings without having ever asked FIDE for the title, and remain untitled to this day (even Americans who have never reached NM in the US and still pay for premium on chess.com). From what I can gather, top junior players in the world often decline lower titles until they reach IM or GM to avoid paying FIDE for the title, but I’m uncertain what benefit this would have for others unless things were different many years ago. The FIDE rules seem to imply that any player whose live rating crosses the threshold can claim the title even years after the fact. Maybe CM was looked down upon as a legitimate title? I’m curious what titled players think about this, since it seems like it’s not just a one-off case.

I'm not a titled player but maybe send an email to FIDE.

CM didn't exist when I was rated over 2200 FIDE. It felt like an inferior title - why would I want to be a Candidate Master (FIDE) when I'm already a National Master (USCF)? One page on Reddit refers to CM as a vanity title. Also, in the early days of CM, almost all recipients were juniors who placed in the Top 3 of various world and continental youth events.

Over the past 15 years, the CM title has become more mainstream and a fair number of adults have chosen to pay the fee modest for it. Now that FM is no longer realistic for me, I am seriously considering the CM title myself, vanity or not.

In recent years, there is motivation to take the CM title: it is a title thus allowing you to compete in events that require titles such as "Titled Tuesday".

Sending the email to FIDE is a good idea

Why does it seem like Fide is just a money grab saying you have to pay for us to give you the title, that's like the NFL saying for you be known as a QB you have to pay us

Jus send the email to FIDE: its trustable and they will handle it

The only email mentioned in this thread goes to the employee handling FIDE matters at US Chess.

IIUC, you don't pay for yearly FIDE memberships. We pay for yearly USCF memberships and title is free. So, it sounds like a balance?

FIDE titles have associated fees paid to FIDE. If the national federation doesn't pay the fee, the player has to

CM costs money and it has no aura

The one-time fee for CM is 50 Euros (about $60). I doubt that amount will discourage any Americans given that most tournament entry fees are higher.

I really want to be titled as soon as possible, CM or NM just so I can at-least play in Titled Tuesday and Bullet Brawl with the other titled players.

Is pretty similar to NM I often feel like but I also didn't know about it being a thing until I was at a tournament talking to a guy about uscf CM thinking that was the only type of CM. If I ever was good enough to go for it I feel like I'd push for FM to distinguish it from uscf CM. At best I'm probably going to hit AIM from AFM and expert and top out tho and never hit NM
