After Aeroflot where 20-year-old Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem confirmed he was a world-class talent, another 20-year-old, Ian Nepomniachtchi, made a breakthrough in the European Championships. Euro, along with the Aeroflot, is undoubtedly among the very toughest Opens on the calendar.

The Russian GM (his surname literally translates as “one who forgets” and may indicate an ancestor who had a run-in with the Czars and deliberately changed name) has been on the radar for several years. However, Ian has a tendency to sudden blunders.

He was superb at the Euro, with 9 points from 11 games and a 2868 performance, winning three of his last four. Baadur Jobava, a very strong GM from Georgia, shared second with Artiom Timofeev (both 8.5). There was a tie from 4-10, with seven players scoring 8 points. There was an even more massive tie from 11-40 (!) with 7.5. The second tie will need resolution because only 22 World Cup spots are available. Sweden's Pia Cramling became European Champion in the women's section, scoring 9 with Viktorija Smylte second on 8.5.

The past year-and-a-half suggest that, apart from Magnus Carlsen, the potential world beaters in the 15-20 age-cohort include Nakamura, Liem, Nepomniachtchi, Caruana, So, Negi, Karjakin, etc. That is going to be a very strong generation — perhaps the strongest ever.

Carlsen recently pointed out that he and his peers grew up with computers. Many learnt the rules from engines and have playing engines and databases since they were toddlers. This could have accelerated development. But most chess players peak in their late 30s or early 40s. So, the Fritz generation as they are known, may scale hitherto undreamt of peaks.

And for Wesley So's consolation ... A new generation of players, "The New Stars In Chess", and they will be known as the ‘post-Carlsen generation’, is coming up; young players not so dependent on computers, not obsessed with the opening theory, looking for much more practical and aggressive play. They are Richard Rapport, Nyzhnyk from Ukraine, Berbatov from Bulgaria. But the leader of this generation I would say is Wesley So. He is extremely talented and has produced some very interesting games, like his wins against Ivanchuk at the World Cup. … GM Adrian Mikhalchishin Read here: “Richárd Rapport – a new star in chess” http://forum.philboxing.com/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=162497&p=3623874#p3623874

Yes, but i think the article is in some way inaccurate.

Top level players will continue to depend on computers. Wesley is dependent on computers and so are all the world beaters. And opening theory continues to be of utmost important and will remain so.

It's tough to keep up without a computer Saturday, April 3, 2010 2:49 AM Today's chess professionals are a far cry from earlier generations of grandmasters who often enjoyed a leisurely lifestyle.

Computers have raised the ante. If your opponent uses one, you have little choice but to do the same.

More than a decade ago, U.S. grandmaster Larry Christiansen complained about what he called "butt-busters": those who had obsessively embraced the use of computer programs for opening preparation. He deplored the long hours they spent crunching chess moves. Adopting their lifestyle was not an option for the three-time U.S. champion.

Today, of course, computer-based chess is the norm - so much so that Magnus Carlsen recently revealed that his usual tool to represent chess positions is a virtual one: a computer program and console, not the customary three- dimensional chess set.

Adjusting to the technology is especially difficult for older players. One of the strongest grandmasters of his generation, 79-year-old Viktor Korchnoi, said: "I think that now I am very weak in opening theory, since I do not work very confidently with a computer. Young opponents constantly outplay me in the initial stage."

GM Adrian Mikhalchishin (an Ukrainian grandmaster now playing for Slovenia), a FIDE Senior Trainer and Chairman of the FIDE Trainer Committee who's now training Brand New GM Richard Rapport might also be available & interested to coach Wesley So ... since he had said ... as i quote ... “But the leader of this generation I would say is Wesley So. He is extremely talented and has produced some very interesting games, like his wins against Ivanchuk at the World Cup"

Just reposting bro joeyj's post in philboxing

UPDATE !!!

Though, GM Le Quang Liem won the Vietnam Chess Championship 2010 qualification convincingly, finishing 1.5 points ahead of competition, in the National Swiss system championship he gained 7.5/9, winning six games and drawing three ...

Four players from the event progressed to the semi finals: Le Quang Liem and the three out of six who shared second place GM Dao Thien Hai, GM Nguyen Anh Dung, and FM Nguyen Duc Hoa.

Semifinal pairings

GM Le Quang Liem 2689 - FM Nguyen Duc Hoa 2324
GM Dao Thien Hai 2523 - GM Nguyen Anh Dun 2464

ref: http://reports.chessdom.com/news-2010/le-quang-liem-vietnam-chess-qualifications

But STILL he lose ... -2.30 Pts ELO !!!

see here ... FIDE's Indicvidual Calculation: http://ratings.fide.com/individual_calculations.phtml?idnumber=12401137&rating_period=2010-05-01

with this GM Le Quang Liem ... live rating now is 2686.7

::: :::

addnl analysis:

Semi-final round:
Nguyen, Duc Hoa f 2324 VIE 1.00 1 0.10 10 1.00
Nguyen, Duc Hoa f 2324 VIE 0.50 1 -0.40 10 -4.00

In the semi-final against the lower ranked Nguyen, Duc Hoa(2324), GM Le Quang Liem(2689) won 1.5-0.5 but lose -3.0 in ELO Pts.

Final round:
Nguyen, Anh Dung g 2464 VIE 1.00 1 0.22 10 2.20
Nguyen, Anh Dung g 2464 VIE 0.50 1 -0.28 10 -2.80

In the Finals ... GM Le Quang Liem(2689) won 1.5-0.5 but lose also -0.80 ELO Pt.

...

From this ... we could further deduce that GM Wesley So(2665) ... has placed his ELO ratings at A High RISK ... by JOINING the BATTLE of GMs (BOGM) come May 24 - 31 2010 in Tagaytay.

He has to win all his games to gain precious but meager points and avoid drawing or losing to lower rated players which will cost him a fortune since he is the Top Rated player!

I hope that if ever Wesley's elo drops in that tournament, it will only be by 1 or 2 points.

Avatar of radcat

Nice info Sir mysql about the Viets. Indeed, I hope Wes doesn't lose much elo points from the BOGM.

But I'm very happy he's joining. I can't imagine people being happy if he snubbed our national championship. And I don't think Wesley is a snub. His joining this tournament now and in the future is good for Philippine chess.

Nepo will probably reach 2700 ahead of LeQuang

As what i´m thinking before, gaya ng sinabi ni Sir joeyj na it will really affect Wesley´s Elo points in this coming BOGM.This is not to disgrace that tournament.Sana man lang, they have to count our future GM to complete their norms...Of course,in Wesley´s part "He will play his best for his race to 2700"...and for the situation of other players who are in need to complete their norm, everytime they loose a single game,it will give a negative impact giving them hard and painstaking to get that norm...kawawa naman.Ang sa akin lang, with the excemption of Wesley So,sa halip na sumali si Wesley, gawin na lang a start of "training session" for Wesley.....Sayang ang time eh?Smile

Avatar of geniokov

If our Top Juniors this time, including Wesley So and some other Juniors all around the world will enter the "Elite" group, that will make them "The strongest Elite group" in Chess history, surpassing the performance of all generations. Not only that they are "computer generated" players....BUT most of them are "Prodigies"...Smile
