2: thanks to the nature of higher dimensions, real space is wrapped around hyperspace, allowing ships to short cut along the smallest tangent of the sphere comprised of several dimensional levels, with real space being the surface. Hence the longest a hyperspace path can be is the dimensional diameter of the galactic extra dimensional sphere. This is why all hyperspace distances are so similar, because most tangents of a sphere are within a relatively small range compared to a galactic plane.

3: In canon comics slugs act as they do in legends, and I don't think slugs have shown up in any other canon format. Obi Wan is seen blocking slugs in canon though. He is still hit by the molten metal.
