it's widely debated whether or not some animals (mainly aquatic life) feel and register pain the same way we do, but the method popular in America, asphyxiation, is generally despite as cruel.

The method "ikejime" is far more humane, makes for tastier fish meat since there's less stress hormones running through the fish before it dies, and is better practice but since it's not easy to do on a commercial scale corporations will never do it since profit margins is what makes our world run unfortunately.
