suggestion: A forfeit at the beginning gives -3 rating points to the forfeiter. Why not give at the same time +1 point to the other players?
forfeiting

@wingfour doesn't make any sense to me. The point is to disincentives people from aborting, there is nothing the other 3 players do to merit a rating change.

Giving +1 point to the other players would be a small compensation for the time they lost. Would also be an extra disincentive to abort games: not only you lose rating, you gift rating to your opponents too. Finally it would prevent general rating deflation.

Gifting players rating points for free only inflates ratings (and it could be abused). This has been discussed before.

yeah, you don't make any sense to me.

Giving +1 point to the other (nonforfeiting) players makes sense to me
a) as compensation for the frustration and wasted time
b) to keep rating from deflating( ! @ GDII)
By the way: the wrong description (3 wins; 1 loss; 1 loss; 2 losses which also would lead to a deflation) of the WTA rating change still is showing up at each game.

There is no deflation problem. The only problem with rating is inflation, not deflation. As I said, giving players rating points for free only inflates ratings, which is undesirable.

Penalizing bad behavior by means of rating reduction is a deflation inducing mechanism. Maybe there are other mechanisms that cause rating inflation, and balance things out. But what are these mechanisms?
