Game review, feedback and analysis

Dan Heisman has written much on the importance of reviewing your games with your opponent (called a "Post-Mortem") as well as getting feedback from top players.  He goes on to suggest getting feedback from humans before engines.  He has gone even further to encourage analyzing your own game first.

This forum can serve as an opportunity to get some feedback on your "slow chess" games.  Blitz and Bullet games may serve as personal opening and time management practice as well as for examples of certain positions or play but, I hope you will avoid seeking feedback on those games.  Let's stick to the slow chess atmosphere (ideally 45/45, 90/30 games but minimally 30/5 or higher) incorporated thru-out the DHLC sites.

Finally,  most of us are thick-skinned enough to see intention from most feedback.  In fact, we might not even post our games if we were not thick-skinned!  However, let's include a level of sportsmanship so not to alienate members who truly look forward to constructive feedback.  On the another hand,  we should be willing to hear from any player about our play and our games. All players who offer comments may benefit from testing their analysis skills and what I call, "thinking out loud"!  It is the same principle we are incorporating in our vote chess games.  Please join our vote chess games to learn more!

Looking forward to seeing your game!  Thank you in advance!  Regards, Joe

Hey Everyone!

This is a player that is rated higher than me and I started out doing well against them. I lost my initiative somewhere in the middlegame and was not able to finish him off. Ended up being a draw because he couldn't mate me with a Bishop/Knight pair. I'm not completely sure how to post games with my thought process during the moves but want to throw this out there for commenting.

8. ... Qb6 was just a development move. Wasn't expecting much else.
9. Rb1? Surprised me. ...Bf5, basic development and threat
10. Nd4?? and Bxb1! was a turnaround moment that I thought I could hold onto for a win.
At this point, the fight went into the right flank and maybe I should have gone up the center instead? Lost the initiative and opponent took the lead.
Thoughts? Thank you!

I regret that no one has offered any thoughts or feedback.  I thought your game very good and I agree with you, what a great start against this opponent.

I also believe you had the initiative and was earning material.  What seemed to change was a result of the Knights being somewhat pinned.  Rather than free the pin, you offered some counterplay capturing some pawns and frankly, some good ideas.  The "calculation" did not work in your favor and you eventually lost material.  An early improvement may have been moving your King to g7, Ref7 or even Rbb7 (around move 22).  The b-Rook had the Bishop pinned in the back rank protecting the b-pawn.  I did like Rb4 however with the double attack, but you began dismissing the pinned Knights.  I thought the idea to take a the d-pawn very good (24...Rxd3) while confronting the LSB, but the calculation was incorrect as f3 would win a piece for White.

BTW, what was the time control for this game?  Very good game!

Thanks so much! I will look over your comments in detail when I have the chance to.

Unfortunately, the time controls were 3 days per move. I know that is not how SCL usually plays but it's what I am able to work with at this point. I live in Peoria, IL and I am able to get OTB games about once or twice a month. (Married w/ children)

My hope is to once a week get a game where I put my board on a table then move the pieces that are online for a chance to play online with OTB type time controls. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again!

Well here's my comments on the game if you are interested.

I think there are a few things to look into about it, like not wasting too much time moving pieces that are already developed so you can get a superior position faster which could lead to more wins.

And one for the record.  Thanks Justin for the game.  Chess.com has been very buggy today, crashing at every moment while trying to copy a game.  So, here it is with our limited analysis.  Let's see if it posts!

Wow - it posted!  Feedback and comments appreciated!

Hi!

Here I am sharing a game that I have just finished. It is a turn based game with 3 days/move. I have put some analysis but I am pretty sure that I miss a lot in the analysis. I would be very grateful if you would like to have a look and point out what I have missed.

Thank you
