Chess.com has a comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all members, including those participating in clubs. Here's an overview of their policies regarding community conduct, fair play, and club activities:

I. Community Conduct

Be Kind and Respectful: Treat others as you'd like to be treated, remember everyone has needs, and be patient and tolerant.

No Abusive Behavior: Avoid personal attacks, threats, harassment, discrimination (racism, sexism, bigotry), or any unkind conduct.

Keep it Clean: Refrain from posting or displaying offensive content, including vulgar language, in usernames, avatars, descriptions, comments, or chat messages.

Stay on Topic: Avoid hijacking threads, trolling, posting meaningless or distracting content, or off-topic links in forums or comments.

No Spamming or Advertising: Do not post advertisements (including religious, political, or recruiting messages) for Chess.com groups, clubs, blogs, or other content on or off Chess.com.

Limit Club Promotion: Avoid excessively promoting your club.

No Religious or Political Debates: Refrain from publicly debating religious or political topics.

No Obscene Content: Do not post obscene or pornographic content.

No Discussion of Illegal Activities: Refrain from discussing illegal activities like drug use.

Account Limits: Do not open more than two accounts; a second anonymous account is allowed for training only.

Private Cheating Reports: Do not publicly accuse opponents of cheating; instead, report them privately to Chess.com.

II. Sportsmanship

Respect Opponents: Handle wins and losses gracefully and accept defeat with humility.

Avoid Disruptions: Do not make opponents wait unnecessarily, disconnect or quit without resigning when lost, or abort games frequently.

Fair Play Policy Adherence: Always follow the fair play policy.

III. Fair Play Policy

Play Your Own Moves: All moves must be your own, without assistance from others or computer tools. This includes refraining from using engines, software, or tablebases that analyze positions or show the best move during play.

Account Integrity: Only use your own account.

No Rating Manipulation: Do not manipulate ratings, matches, or game outcomes.

Respect Opponent's Gameplay: Do not interfere with other members' gameplay.

Report Suspicion, Don't Cheat: If you suspect someone is cheating, report them to Chess.com instead of trying to cheat yourself.

IV. Competitive Events Policy

Eligibility: Participation in competitive events may depend on factors like age, compliance with fair play rules, Chess.com account statistics, and information registered with chess federations.

Full Name Requirement: To be eligible, players generally need their full name on their profile.

Monitoring and Environment: Players may be required to join video calls for monitoring and adhere to rules about their playing environment and equipment to ensure fair play.

Inspections: Players might need to submit to inspections before or during an event.

V. Additional Guidelines

Club Roles: Chess.com defines roles within clubs with different permissions for managing events and members.

Customizing Matches: Club organizers can customize match settings when challenging other clubs.

Club Arena Rules: Organizers can limit scoring players in Club Arenas.

Online Tournament Requirements: To join tournaments, players often need to be premium members or have a history of rated games and a good win/timeout ratio.

Chess.com's Fair Play Policy supports our mission to maintain a clean and fair platform for chess players around the world. In light of this mission, we reserve the right and discretion to monitor all chess games played on our platform.

You agree to support our mission of maintaining a clean and fair platform by not engaging in any dishonest, deceitful, fraudulent, or other similar conduct when playing on our platform or in our events, including the following:

All of your moves must be your own.

Do not cheat in any way.

Do not get help from any other person, including parents, friends, coaches, or another player.

Do not use chess engines, software of any kind, bots, plugins, browser extensions, or any tools that analyze positions during play. We can detect if you are using any of these programs.

Do not use tablebases or any other resources that show the best move (in both Online and Daily chess).

You may use Opening Explorer or other books in Daily chess only (not in Online / Live play).

Do not perform any automated analysis or “blunder checking“ of your games in progress.

Do not allow anyone else to use your account.

Do not use anyone else's account.

Do not artificially manipulate ratings, matches, or game outcomes.

Do not interfere with the gameplay of other members.

Suspecting your opponent of using outside help is not an excuse to do the same. If you suspect someone is cheating, report the player to Chess.com.

NOTE: This Fair Play Policy applies to your use of our Services; however, it does not apply to your games that are not against other users, such as in the game mode versus Chess.com computer (i.e., non-human, virtual) “bots“. We may grant exceptions to this policy for content creators on special occasions, provided the request is made to us well in advance. The content creator must be in good standing, and the exception must only apply to either unrated games or authorized “content accounts” (e.g., speed-run or streamed-training accounts). If an exception is approved, the creator must follow all guidelines provided by the Fair Play team. Please note that we may expand or narrow any applicable exceptions to the Fair Play Policy at any time without notice to you, so you should remain familiar with this policy.

WARNING: Consistent with our User Agreement, if we determine or suspect that you have violated our Fair Play Policy in any way, then we may close your account and label it publicly closed for Fair Play violation(s). We also reserve and maintain the complete right to take any action that we may deem appropriate in response to a violation(s) or suspected violation(s) of our Fair Play Policy, including but not limited to publicly disclosing facts, communications, and findings regarding any violation(s) of the Fair Play Policy and disclosing such materials to governmental authorities or chess governing bodies. All account status changes are made at our sole discretion. Under some circumstances, including for titled players, we may, at our discretion, allow you to open a second-chance account, subject to additional terms and conditions, including your provision of a written acknowledgement of your violation(s) in the form of an agreement we provide. If further violations of the Fair Play Policy are detected, you may be subject to a lifetime ban from Chess.com. For the avoidance of doubt, Chess.com has no obligation to provide second-chance accounts, even for titled players, and reviews Fair Play Policy violations on a case-by-case basis.

Our User Agreement also has specific rules of conduct and other restrictions that users must abide by when using the Services. As a condition of your use of our Services, you must abide by both this Fair Play Policy and our User Agreement. In the event of any conflict between our User Agreement and this Fair Play Policy, our User Agreement will supersede. All capitalized terms used but not defined in this Fair Play Policy have the respect meanings set forth in the User Agreement.

We reserve the right to modify this policy at any time with or without notice to you, in which case we will update the “Last updated“ date at the top of this Fair Play Policy.

Acceptance of Policy

When you use our Gift Membership Service, you agree to this Policy and to all of the sections included within our User Agreement. If you do not agree to this Policy or our User Agreement, then you may not use our Gift Membership Service.

A Gift Membership is a membership paid for by one person (the “Purchaser”) for someone else (the “Recipient”). A Purchaser and Recipient cannot be the same party. On the day the Purchaser successfully completes the purchase of a Gift Membership (the "Purchase Date"), Chess.com will create an order confirmation number for the Purchaser. Gift Memberships, unlike other Chess.com Memberships, are non-renewing and allow access to Chess.com Memberships by the Recipient only from the date when the Gift Membership begins (the "Gift Start Date") through the duration of the membership purchased (the “Gift Term”). Any purchase or use of Gift Memberships is subject to this Policy, which is in addition to and does not replace the general Chess.com User Agreement.

Purchasing a Gift Membership

Gift Memberships may only be purchased at Chess.com. Specific terms and conditions set forth in the purchase process may apply. At the time of purchase, the Purchaser will choose the date on which the Gift Membership will be presented to the Recipient (the “Gift Delivery Date”), which must be within 90 days of the Purchase Date. Chess.com will generate the Gift Membership that will allow the Recipient to access the Gift Membership on the Gift Delivery Date, and Chess.com will email the recipient, and/or additionally send a Chess.com Inbox Message, if applicable, on the Gift Delivery Date. Chess.com also will send a “receipt email” to the Purchaser on the Purchase Date with an order confirmation number for the Gift Membership.

Chess.com is not responsible and assumes no liability for non-delivery of an email because of an invalid address, Purchaser incorrectly applied email address, spam filters, or any other reason. If the Purchaser wishes to have the gift announced on the Gift Delivery Date in some way other than Chess.com announcing it via email or Chess.com Inbox Message, then the Purchaser is solely responsible for doing so.

Accessing a Gift Membership

If the Purchaser uses the Recipient’s Chess.com username to deliver the Gift Membership:

The Gift Start Date (i.e., when the Gift Membership begins) will be the same date as the Gift Delivery Date and conclude at the end of the Gift Term, regardless of whether the Recipient accesses the Membership on the Gift Start Date, a later date or never.

If the Purchaser uses the Recipient’s email address to deliver the Gift Membership, and either:

i.) If the Recipient has a Chess.com account prior to Gift Delivery Date, and the email address associated to the Gift Membership matches the email address associated with the Recipient’s Chess.com account:

The Gift Start Date (i.e., when the Gift Membership begins) will be the same date as the Gift Delivery Date and conclude at the end of the Gift Term, regardless of whether the Recipient accesses the Membership on the Gift Start Date, a later date or never.

ii.) If the Recipient has a Chess.com account prior to Gift Delivery Date, and the email address associated with the Gift Membership does NOT match the email address associated with the Recipient’s Chess.com account:

The Gift Membership will not start under the Recipient’s existing Chess.com account. To begin the Gift Membership, the Recipient can either (a) contact Chess.com Support; or (b) establish a new Chess.com account using the Recipient’s email address associated with the Gift Membership. Immediately upon creation of that new Chess.com account, the Gift Term will begin.

iii.) If the Recipient does not have a Chess.com account prior to Gift Delivery Date;

To begin the Gift Membership, the Recipient must create a Chess.com account with the same email address associated with the Gift Membership. Immediately upon creation of that new Chess.com account, the Gift Term will begin.

Refunds and notice of non-transferable

Gift Memberships are not refundable except as required by applicable law. Gift Memberships may not be resold or transferred. A Gift Membership is not valid and will not be honored, and Chess.com will not be liable for the value of the Gift Membership, if the Gift Membership is obtained from an unauthorized seller or reseller, including through any Internet auction site.

Single-Use Only; Not Combinable with Other Offers; Not Exchangeable.

The Gift Membership is for a one-time use only. The purchasing or redemption of the Gift Membership may not be combined with any other offers, coupons, discounts or promotions. The Gift Membership may not be exchanged or credited toward the purchase of any Chess.com Memberships.

Fraud and notice of non-payment

Chess.com reserves the right to refuse to honor a Gift Membership if Chess.com suspects that the Gift Membership was obtained fraudulently. Chess.com reserves the right to refuse to honor any Gift Membership in the event of a disputed credit card charge, bounced check or other failure of consideration.

Changes to Agreement

Chess.com reserves the right to modify, alter, change or amend this Agreement from time to time in its discretion without advance notice. The current version of this Agreement is available at https://www.chess.com/legal/gifting.

From time to time, Chess.com sponsors any number of giveaways, games of chance, or sweepstakes events.

NO PURCHASE WILL BE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN PRIZES OR MONEY FOR ANY EVENTS OF THIS NATURE. MAKING A PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. ALL SUCH EVENTS ARE VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW.

By participating in such Events, you unconditionally accept and agree to comply with and abide by these Rules, any Official Event Rules related to the Event, and the decisions of Chess.com, which shall be final and binding in all respects. Chess.com will be responsible for the collection, submission or processing of Entries and the overall administration of such Events. Entrants should look solely to us for any questions, comments or problems you may have related to these Events.

ELIGIBILITY

All such Events will be open to legal residents of lawful age in locations where these Events are permitted. Chess.com, and its respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, retailers, sales representatives, advertising and promotion agencies, and each of our respective officers, directors and employees, are ineligible to enter the Sweepstakes or win a prize. Household Members and Immediate Family Members of such individuals are also not eligible to enter or win. "Household Members" shall mean those people who share the same residence at least three months a year. "Immediate Family Members" shall mean parents, step-parents, legal guardians, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, or spouses. These Events are subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and are void where prohibited or restricted by law.

PRIZES

Chess.com will determine and announce the available Prizes for any such Event in due course. Only one prize per person and per household will be awarded. Gift cards and gift certificates are subject to the terms and conditions of the issuer. Prizes cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash or substituted by winner. We reserve the right in our sole and absolute discretion to award a substitute prize of equal or greater value if a prize described in the Official Rules is unavailable or cannot be awarded, in whole or in part, for any reason. The approximate retail value (ARV) of the prize will represent our good faith determination. That determination is final and binding and cannot be appealed. If the actual value of the prize turns out to be less than the stated ARV, the difference will not be awarded in cash. We make no representation or warranty concerning the appearance, safety or performance of any prize awarded. Restrictions, conditions, and limitations may apply. We will not replace any lost or stolen prize items.

These Events are open to legal residents of eligible locations and Prizes only will be awarded and/or delivered to addresses within said locations. All federal, state and/or local taxes, fees, and surcharges are the sole responsibility of the prize winner. Failure to comply with the Official Rules will result in forfeiture of the prize.

HOW TO ENTER

You may enter any such Event during the Promotion Period online by visiting the applicable entry form, which will be made available on our website.

Automated or robotic Entries submitted by individuals or organizations will be disqualified. Internet entry must be made by the Entrant. Any attempt by Entrant to obtain more than the stated number of Entries by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations, logins or any other methods, including, but not limited to, commercial contest/sweepstakes subscription notification and/or entering services, will void Entrant's Entries and that Entrant may be disqualified. Final eligibility for the award of any prize is subject to eligibility verification as set forth below. All Entries must be posted by the end of the Promotion Period in order to participate. Our database clock will be the official timekeeper for all such Events.

WINNER DETERMINATION OR SELECTION

The Winner(s) of such Event will be determined or selected in the manner described in the Official Rules for the applicable Event.

WINNER NOTIFICATION

Winner will be notified by email at the email address provided in the Entry Information with the timeframe announced in the Official Event Rules for the applicable Event. Potential Winner must accept a prize by email as directed by Chess.com within the timeframe announced in the Official Event Rules for the applicable Event. We will not be responsible for any delay or failure to receive notification for any reason, including inactive email account(s), technical difficulties associated therewith, or Winner’s failure to adequately monitor any email account.

Any winner notification not responded to or returned as undeliverable may result in prize forfeiture. The potential prize winner may be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability, and a Publicity Release (collectively "the Prize Claim Documents"). No substitution or transfer of a prize is permitted except by Chess.com.

PRIVACY

Any personal information supplied by you will be subject to our privacy policy at https://www.chess.com/legal/privacy. By entering any such Event, you grant to Chess.com permission to share your email address and any other personally identifiable information with third party Event partners for the sole purpose of administration and prize fulfillment. You agree that we may use your name, image and likeness for advertising, publicity and promotional purposes in any and all media without compensation (unless prohibited by law) or additional consents from you or any third party and without prior notice and you agree to execute specific consent to such use if requested by us.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

Chess.com assumes no responsibility or liability for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate entry information, or for any faulty or failed electronic data transmissions; (b) any unauthorized access to, or theft, destruction or alteration of entries at any point in the operation of this Event; (c) any technical malfunction, failure, error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or communications line failure, regardless of cause, with regard to any equipment, systems, networks, lines, satellites, servers, camera, computers or providers utilized in any aspect of the operation of the Event; (d) inaccessibility or unavailability of any network or wireless service, the Internet or website or any combination thereof; (e) suspended or discontinued Internet, wireless or landline phone service; or (f) any injury or damage to Entrant’s or to any other person’s computer or mobile device which may be related to or resulting from any attempt to participate in the Event or download of any materials in the Event.

If, for any reason, the Event is not capable of running as planned for reasons which may include without limitation, infection by computer virus, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Event, Chess.com reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Event in whole or in part. In such event, we shall immediately suspend all drawings and prize awards, and we reserve the right to award any remaining prizes (up to the total ARV as set forth in the applicable Official Event Rules) in a manner deemed fair and equitable by us. Chess.com and the Released Parties shall not have any further liability to any participant in connection with the applicable Event.

The following terms apply to your use and access of our Courses through Chess.com. These terms apply without prejudice to other terms and policies that may also be applicable to your use of Chess.com. Any terms not covered in these Courses Terms will be ruled by the Chess.com Terms of Service as they may apply.

In these terms, when we use the word 'Course', we are referring to a piece of digital content consisting of a chess lesson, which can be provided in both MoveTrainer and video formats.

Access and Use of Courses

When you are given access to a Course through Chess.com, you have the right to use it for your personal use, in accordance with these terms and Chess.com's Terms of Service, for as long as you have an active Chess.com account.

When you request access to a Course we will either send you an Order Confirmation to notify you that we have accepted your order for a Course or reject it if we have reasonable grounds, such as if you have previously breached our Terms of Service or if we consider the cancellation right is being abused. If we do not accept or cannot fulfill your order for any reason, we will explain the reason. No payment will be taken under normal circumstances. If we have taken payment, any such sums will be refunded to you as soon as possible and within 14 days.

Restrictions on Use

You must use the Course according to the following restrictions. Failure to comply will be a breach of these terms, allowing us to remove your access to such Course or terminate the account without a refund for any Course you have purchased.

The Course:

is personal to you and cannot be transferred to others. You can use it wherever you want in the world provided you comply with local laws;

is non-exclusive to you. We may supply the same or similar Course to other users;

may be used only on Chess.com (it is not a PGN file and you cannot export or download it);

may not be:

copied by you;

changed by you (which means, in particular, that you are not allowed to adapt, reverse-engineer or decompile it, or try to extract the source code from it, except where any of this is allowed by law);

combined or merged with, or used in, any computer program;

distributed, made available, or sold by you to any third party. To be clear, you must not reproduce or make available any part of a Course online or to any other person in any way without our specific explicit prior email permission;

exported out of Chess.com;

contains information owned by us or third parties or both. You must not conceal, change, or remove any markings which show who owns this information, such as copyright (©), registered trademark (®), or unregistered trademark (™) markings.

Your Right to Cancel

You may cancel your Course order and ask for a refund at any time within 30 days from the date of your purchase. We will refund you within 14 days from the receipt of your refund request.

We cannot sustain relationships with customers who repeatedly cancel orders in such a way that suggests they are not making purchases in good faith. If you repeatedly cancel orders for the same Course (same Course ID number or same title) while asking for a refund, we will reject your request for a second refund of the same Course. Also, if we notice behavior that we reasonably consider represents abuse of the cancellation right, we may refuse to accept further orders from you and reject any refund request due to abuse. Asking for refunds and canceling orders constantly or repeatedly can be considered an abuse of the cancellation policy.

Availability of Courses

The Course you purchase through Chess.com may change over time.

We will do everything we reasonably can to give you access to your Course for as long as you remain a Chess.com member, but we cannot guarantee indefinite access. In very exceptional circumstances, if we no longer have the right to make it available, you will no longer be able to view that content from your Chess.com account.

In addition, we may have to remove or stop you from accessing some Courses, or replace some Courses in your Chess.com account with an edited version, due to legal or other issues, or if you breach these terms. If we need to permanently remove a Course for these reasons, it will be removed from your Chess.com account and you may be entitled to a refund (except where we’ve removed your purchased Course because you’ve breached these terms).

Account Closure

If you close your account or we terminate it in accordance with the Terms of Service, you may lose access to the Courses in your Chess.com account. You will not be entitled to a full or partial refund of any sums paid for access to those Courses.

In certain cases, we may offer the opportunity to open a second chance account at our discretion. However, there is no guarantee that your Courses will be transferred to the new account.

Chess Etiquette (mostly OTB's)

There are some official and unofficial rules of etiquette in the game of chess. The general theme of chess etiquette is to be a good sport and to be respectful. Some of the more common official rules of etiquette are as follows:

• Every game must begin and end with the players shaking hands.

• Between the two handshakes, no talking is permitted. "Check" need not be said. Players are responsible for noticing where all of the pieces on the board are located, and what threats are pending.

• Never do anything to distract any other player in the tournament, especially your opponent.

• Always use the "touch move" rule.

• If an illegal move is made, the tournament director should be summoned. In a tournament using a "Sudden Death" time control, the other player receives an extra two minutes when one player makes an illegal move.

• Never gloat over a victory, or become despondent or hostile following a defeat. It is always best to analyze the game with your opponent, after the game ends, and in a different room from where you played. Leave the playing room quietly when you finish so as not to distract the other people who are still playing.

• Never comment on a game that is in progress, whether the game is yours or one that you are just watching.

• The tournament director has the authority to punish breaches of etiquette, and may add or subtract time as a sanction. In extreme cases, players may be forfeited for violating the rules and spectators may be banned from the site.

These rules of etiquette generally apply to tournaments, but it is always a good idea to follow these. Being a good sport in chess and having fun generally makes for a a better chess player.
