How do I get better. I am 800 now, but I want around 1100 by the end of the year. What should I do?

chilllychess

just keep playing, learn openings, and do puzzles. That's all you need to get to 1100.

Try to find a local chess club if you arent in one already.

You can watch youtube videos on it, some IMs and GMs have channels, where they sometimes discuss how to break through certain areas.

  1. Improve board awareness. Most losses at lower levels are because you move your say queen to a square that is under attack by low value piece.
  2. Go over every game you play and figure out what went wrong.
  3. Try to follow basic principles of chess (King safety, Activating pieces, etc.)
  4. Improve on basic tactics. They say puzzles are good but I'm skeptical for 800 level.

puzzles!! as many as you can! tactics tactics tactics at the lower level i have not studied an opening at all maybe 20 minutes ever and im 1300 now after a year of playing on and off. i mainly did puzzles and am part of a local chess club as well that helps too. review all of your games and make sure you calculate! think about what moves your opponent will make before you play your move! Longer time controls help as well because you should be improving your calculation by doing puzzles and it will take time to calculate throughout the game.

I have a rapid peak at 1,920 and the thing that has helped me most is chess books. At your level How to Win at Chess by Levy Rozman is a great resource. After that something more in depth, like Grind Like a Grandmaster by Magnus Carlsen and David Howell.

Thanks! These are all great ideas that I think will be useful to me.happy.png

Just play and analyze your mistakes and misses

Has anyone done a study about whether there are limitations in chess rating due to intelligence limitations?

Are there any ~100 IQ GMs? Or even ~100 IQ players > 1200?

I am honestly think I might hit a limit because of this.

Oh, and do the puzzles here. The puzzles and lessons are great.

I am not a very smart person, but if you want to get better just get better. I don't have any good advice for you. All the try-hards in the forums probably covered them all.

Peace.

Try to break away from using memorized lines of play and other conventional trainings meant for players outside of the top rung if you do that. Flawed training that doesn't fully exert you will encourage bad habits like making unnecessary static blunders, breaking from your own plan when you don't need to, using too much prophylaxis, imitating other players blindly, using other people's ideas instead of knowing how to make your own, making impulsive moves, etc.

Do not listen to people who simply tell you what to do without proving why their idea is correct...So maybe someone tells you to play the Nimzowitch....Why? Why the Sicilian? Why the London? When they are coming up with 100% accurate variations, it's because they are using thorough reasoning, have good experience that really represents the full gamut of chess and lots of chess-specific knowledge.

Next, pay more attention, think ahead more thoroughly and find justified moves that have valid piece interactions and use chess books to give you some knowledge from the experience of other chess players.

Your rating is also an approximation of your strength, it is not the actual measure. Accuracy is a much closer measure and I would recommend you to run your games through Lucaschess to see how strong you really play instead of refer to Elo or Glicko strength all the time.

Benjamin Finegold! he has a plethora of free lecture videos that people pay to see in person and he records and puts on his youtube channel. He also has a lot of good educational content specifically for youtube and he keeps a lighthearted funny tone to keep the learning interesting!

How do I get from 1400 to 1700 in a year? I keep on being stuck around the 1400-1500 mark.
