What a fine, fine musician. Actually, he was the reason I got kicked out of the Athens Conservatory some 44 years ago! Because, one day I confided to my piano teacher (a nice lady, but strict as they come) my admiration for Gould - and all she had to say was that his palying posture was all wrong. I told her that I would not mind playing standing on my head, if only I could play like him. But, 11-year olds are not supposed to snap such witticisms back at their teachers, so she reprimanded me badly. Next day, instead of my set piece (and inspired by a rare recording of the solo violin sonatas transcribed for the piano by Gould) I started playing the prelude from the 2nd ...Cello Suite, comping jazz harmonizations on the left hand. It was a pitty: I was not given the chance to finish the prelude on that particular day - but I have been playing it every morning, ever since....
