Good Apps

Does anyone know of any good chess apps for the ipod touch/iphone. I want one with a strong engine(I would like at least 2600) where I can set up positions, also an openings database or openings book would be nice but not essential. If anyone has any good recommendations could you tell me what strength the engine is.

Any of the first 5-6 here should be pretty good.  I would especially recommend either tChess Pro or Stockfish. The latter is an amazing value - one of the best chess apps in the Store and totally free.

Cheers

Thanks, I was looking at tChess Pro and also Deep Green, do you know how strong Deep Green is? I'll definately check out Stockfish.

Not even the developer of Deep Green knows that (see here, for instance), but it's pretty darn strong, in my experience! :)

Deep Green is really more for the casual player - very high marks for design, but it lacks a lot of the features serious players enjoy, such as visibility on the opening book, export/import PGN, etc.

You also can try Shredder and Hiarcs, and the iPhone version of Chess Tiger, called Chess.

Yes, Chess & Shredder are ok - I have them in the list above.

As for Hiarcs, I don't know... I have it on my iPhone, but it's pretty hard to justify spending $10 on a (non-universal) app that looks like Stockfish's ugly sister.

Yeah I might try chess, I've heard in the reviews that Shredder isn't actually that strong onn the iphone.

Does anyone know if the chessbase app is any good and do you have to be connected to the internet to use the database or is it on the iphone/ipod touch?

And is Chess Openings Pro by Tom Ashmore or Chess Openings by Arizona Software any good?

Also, who is Chess developed by as I think it has a different icon on the Irish app store or something, I can't seem to find it and there are a couple called Chess

Chess Openings Pro is very good. The Arizona Software app is OK, but definitely more superficial. The Chessbase app does require internet connectivity to communicate with the database.

The relevant app is published by Christophe Théron

True, Hiarcs interface is ugly, but is a really good chess engine: http://www.hiarcs.com/iHiarcsChess.htm

I don't like those openings apps, I think they are too simple. I haven't found any app for iPhone/iPad similar to Chess Position Trainer Cry

The Chessbase app is a poor app too, only an interface for internet access to this database: http://www.chesslive.de

Yeah, thanks, I read that but am still not entirely sure what it does. Does it let you save all your openings and variations or something like that? I see you can play against whatever openings you like with an option of playing blindfold which could be good practise.

I see Fritz came top of the list but I think that is only 2320 strength
