Groovy Gang Ladder rules

The ladder is a position based, ongoing tournament that is open to anyone in the Groovy Gang that is rated 1199 or under.

To become a participant in the Ladder Match tournament, all you have to do is either post a request to be added in the Ladder Discussion Forum or send me a message through the Chess.com system.  Then you will be added at the bottom of the ladder.

1. Once you have been accepted on the ladder, you may challenge anyone within four places of your current ranking.  Normally, this would be people ranked higher than you but there are a couple of situations where it might be advantageous to play against someone lower ranked.

For example, if you are ranked at #9, you may challenge anyone ranked #5-8.  You may not challenge anyone rated higher than #5 because they are more than four ranked spots higher than you.

This means that anyone in the top 5 can challenge for the title.

2. Matches can be either Rated or Unrated Standard matches.  Rated matches may be declined without penalty, however, the player who declines a rated match must reply with an unrated match or forfeit. A Standard Unrated 3 Day Match may not be declined without forfeit.

3. To issue a challenge, see the next post for instructions.

4. After you have sent a challenge to your selected opponent, you MUST post your challenge in the Ladder Challenges forum.

5. After the challenge is accepted/denied, it MUST be posted in the Ladder Challenge forum.

6. If the lower ranked player wins the match, the players’ positions on the Ladder will be swapped.  If the result is a draw or a loss, the positions will remain the same.

7. If a challenge is not accepted within 3 days time OR if a match is declined, the standings of the players will be swapped.  The player issuing the challenge should post notification of the time having passed in the Ladder Discussion forum.

8. Positive attitudes only on the ladder.  Whining, complaining, sniping, moaning, antagonizing others and other rude treatment of members will result in a warning and then banishment from the Ladder.

9. New players join at the bottom of the ladder.

10. Each player may only participate in one Ladder Match at a time.  No exceptions.  Everybody wants to play Voodoooo but only one at a time can.

11. There are no consecutive rematches permitted on the Ladder.  In order to challenge the same player again, the lower ranked player MUST challenge another member first. No exceptions.

12. You can certainly play the same player again immediately, but it will not be a Ladder Match game.

13. Enjoy the competition and HAVE FUN!!!

Step by Step Instructions for Challenging Someone to a Ladder Match

Go to the Ladder Standings Forum post to see the list of available opponents.  Choose the opponent you would like to challenge that is within four ranking spots of yourself and click on their username.  This takes you to their profile page where you can issue a challenge using the normal link to do so on the left hand side of the screen.

When you challenge them, there is an unchecked box in the challenge window that says, “More Options”.  Click on this box.

That will open other options for the challenge.  Please type “Groovy Gang Ladder Challenge” in the area given for the title of the challenge game.  Then, click on the ‘Create New Game’ button.

Next, go over to the Groovy Gang Ladder Challenges Forum and announce that you have challenged that player.

Once the challenge is accepted, either player can go to the Groovy Gang Ladder Challenges Forum and post that the challenge has been accepted and play has begun.  One of you MUST do this though.

When the game is completed, either player can go to the Groovy Gang Ladder Challenges Forum and post the results.  These results will be carried over to the Ladder Standings forum as soon as the admin is able to do so.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat with another opponent.  Cool

Groovy Gang games are intended to be fun and quick and not to drag out. This is why our tournaments are almost exclusively No Vacation. Groovy Gang Ladder games will tolerate a maximum 3 days vacation per game.

Vacation during Groovy Ladder games:

  1. You should not take vacation during a ladder game.
  2. In case of unforeseen situation you can take up to 3 days vacation per game. Any part of a day counts as a whole day.
  3. If you take more than 3 days of vacation, your game may be forfeited,
  4. The player who wants to claim a win due to the opponent being on Vacation has to post the move they're on the Groovy Ladder Challenges forum. This will be counted as the first date. If the opponent does not return to the game after 3 days, post your request to be awarded a win on the same forum.
  5. If the vacationing opponent returns to the game before a total of 3 days has been reached and goes on leave again, the person wanting to claim victory will have to post the move they're at again.
  6. The decision about forfeiting a game is at the discretion of the admins.

I trust these rules are clear and members will understand why they're needed.

Premium members, who have set 'automatic vacation', be aware that you'll go on vacation automatically just before your time out.

Member Rating limits for the Groovy Gang Ladder:

A reminder of the opening paragraph of the Groovy Gang Ladder Rules: "The ladder is a position based, ongoing tournament that is open to anyone in the Groovy Gang that is rated 1199 or under. "

As of now, we'll make the rule more explicit. If any member has a rating of > 1200 for more than consecutive months, they'll be asked to resign from the Groovy Gang Ladder and asked to join the Groovers+ Club and the Groovers+ Ladder.

The reason for this rule is because the Groovy Gang is intended for players rated < 1199. Although we do not enforce this rule for Club membership and we do have some tournaments for > 1200 rated players as well, this ladder is specifically intended for the < 1199 rated players.

Chess.com have removed the ability to title individual games.

Please also send a DM to the other player to compensate for lack of title.

This will ensure your opponent knows the challenge is a Groovy Gang Ladder Challenge 🪜 Thanks

Additional rule and explanation

11. "Once a game result has been posted in the Ladder standings, the loser of the game must wait 24 hours before issuing a new challenge."

A key component of ensuring the ladder stays competitive and fun for all is to make sure that everyone has a fair opportunity to climb the ladder. If you lose a game, you can be challenged right away. After 24 hours if you haven't been challenged, you'll be able to issue a new challenge.
