Help! Having trouble with Build Up Your Chess

First of all Yusupov INSISTS that you play each diagram with all variations on the chessboard. It takes so long to set up each diagram on the chessboard. Yet I can't do it all in my head and he is adamant about going through each on the chessboard. Secondly,in playing the exercises, I have no clue which side I am on. Has anyone gone through this book? You could use two boards, or use chessbase for variations.

His books are great but they are HARD WORK. Much more advanced stuff than advertized.

stwils, even the first volume of Build Up Your Chess is hard. i would say for players 1600 and over (USCF).

I would say that if you can follow the variations CLEARLY in your head, then there is not need to set up a chessboard. You need to be 100% sure that's the case though, which means that you can understand the idea behind each move in the variation and understand why it works.
