No, not e4 but d4
how do you handle 1. c4 c6?

If you want to stay into a pure English Opening, you should try not to play e4 or d4. We have a forum on that: http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/1-c4-c6 Of course, if you want to transpose into another opening you could do that.

Sometimes you can play 1.c4 c6 2.e4 if you know your opponent always plays the Slav but plays many defences to 1.e4 and you specifically want to prepare a Panov Attack against the Caro Kann.
Another thing to watch out for is the Stonewall Dutch and to have something ready for itThank you and more power!
