How to make sure I'm not missing a better move

Hello!

Lots of times it happens that I miss a good move, and instead do a much worse one. I'm usually a fast player, (No, not like 2 second moves but 30 at the most) and it

's hard not to rush. That is probably my problem tho. However even when I'm playing with 60 min of time, I rush and do bad moves. Does anybody have any tips for how to make sure I'm not missing something? I know I should just slow down a bit, but even when I do I make mistakes XD

I'm also a bit ashamed to say that usually when I win it's because my opponent ran out of time lol

Thank you! Any tips would be appreciated happy.png

**Edit** thank you all for your tips! Chess.com community is wonderful grin.png

DasBurner

if you have 60 minutes you should be spending a lot of time per move to avoid blunders. maybe play 10 minutes instead so you use more of your time

WowThisIsWeird

Yeah, I'll try doing more time, maybe (until I improve) I could set a timer to make sure that I think about my move for at least 15 seconds.

Well the only time I've done 60|0 is OTB, and there what I would do is try to relax, calm down, and make sure to avoid overthinking things. If you make every game as something super intense then you'll get burned out quickly. Just take your time, think, and make sure you aren't blundering after EVERY move.

ninjaswat

I'd spend maybe 15 seconds choosing candidate moves and 15 seconds thinking about the threats of your opponent at LEAST every move... no matter whether it's a forced capture or not.

Ok! Thank you all for your tips happy.png

Make sure to at least: find candidate moves for you

then for each of Those moves, find a few candidate moves for your opponent, and calculate them.

Okay that covers most things but what about prophyllaxis (I cant speel)? Generally that takes looking from the other side right?

Do puzzles if you aren't already. You'll start to see a lot of common tactics and motifs. And remember, before every move, make sure you aren't hanging anything, or you aren't missing a hanging piece. Even if it's just a pawn.

that's not something you should be ashamed of. it's not your fault that your opponents are bad at time management.

Yeah, I'm just saying that I can never checkmate my opponents XD, something that I think happened on my other account (that I ended up closing cause the rating was really low-200 or something) my lone king was getting chased around and I won because of time lol

if you have nothing but a king then if your opponent runs out of time it's a draw. can't win with nothing but a king.

Hmm yeah maybe I meant something else? I can't access my account tho so I can't see lol

Oh, and one suggestion I just thought of is to learn the basic endgames. A lot of people at low levels don't know how to win with a queen or a rook. They just try to stumble into a checkmate. One game I played recently, for example, I was on the losing side of a K+R endgame, but he just didn't know how to end it. We drew on repetition. Not my finest game, but it could've ended worse.

(The bad endgame starts after move 47.)

WowThisIsWeird

Yeah, I know how to checkmate with two rooks; one queen; and one rook. But my pawn endgames are not good. (But I'm a free member so I can't do that many lessons, and I just did my once-per-week lesson)

I'm sure there plenty of videos on YouTube for king and pawn endgames. As a general rule of thumb, the king goes in front of the pawn, and you want to take as much space as possible with your king.

MegaPro-123

i rarely enter pawn endgames. most of my games end when me or my opponent resigns after blundering the queen or some significant amount of material.

You might wanna use something like lichess or chesstempo for puzzles and endgame-studying, then.

Yes, part of “find opponents candidate moves”

I failed to do this today and lost a drawn rook ending today to finish my tournament at 2/7 and disgracing my alekhine defense

Ah I thought you meant find moves for your opponent after each of your candidate moves, makes more sense now.
