How to not blunder

Sort:

Hello, I am rated around 900 in rapid. I have gained around 200 points over the past couple months. My problem is one day I play really good games, and the next day, I make 5 blunders in one game. I'm not distracted or anything, I feel the same but my chess game is just off. Does anyone know anything that could help me with this?

My late father used an expression to describe this life phenomenon (good one day, bad another day). Some days, you get the bear, and some days, the bear gets you. It's just part of life. Good luck!

fischers golden rule helped me increase my rapid rating a bit.

You move too fast!!! You're playing 35, 45, and 55 move games at a 10 minute time control and at the end of the game you still have more than 5 minutes left?! Nobody moving that fast will benefit from any other advice than to slow down!

Chess requires using your brain. Every day life, for the most part, doesn't require much brain power unless you are in a field that requires logic or critical thinking, e.g., Math, Engineering, Law, etc. Since people are normally auto piloting around and not thinking very much I don't think they realize how much of an impact their emotions, sleep patterns, diet, etc. has on their ability to think. While this may seem counter intuitive, your issue with consistency, and the solution to this issue, may not have anything to do with chess.

I have found that my brain is the "freshest" shortly after waking up and slowly declines throughout the day. Perhaps before playing chess try and assess whether you are in the "right" mindset to be able to quell your emotions and focus on the game. If it isn't the right time, don't play. Turning off all devices and meditating for a few minutes before hand and getting your brain in a calm state may help too.

I know it sounds foo-fooy, but humans are complex systems. The manifestation of a symptom isn't always where the focus should be.

I found GM Igor Smirnov's free master class very helpful. Search him on youtube and you should be able to find it.
