How to play the Danish Gambit

Sorry for the necromancy, I'm no pro but if I played f6 I believe the pawn could take d7, checking the king, and winning a rook.

You're correct but some mistakes in the example:
Move 6 (Black): The e4 square is unguarded by white, black could place the knight there instead of retreating
Move 11 (Black) By seeing the bishop and queen on the same diagonal, black is most likely to go for Nf5
Move 12 (Black) Same point as Move 11, with the addition of f6 being a possibility
