How to use the rating range setting?

Hi!

Under "Custom challenge" there is a "rating range" setting and I can't figure out how to make it work. It sometimes seems to work (waits several minutes to start a game with an opponent in the selected range), but most often it does not (starts a game right away with an opponent outside the selected range). Can someone explain the steps to make it work?

After clicking "customize", do I have to click "done" before clicking on "Play" or do I have to keep it open and click "Play" right away? Or something else entirely?

Thanks for your help

PS: I want to play standard fog of war with lower rating range -200

When you set the range and click play (and don't join an existing open challenge), you are saying you still get paired with player less than -200?

spacebar

or is it when you click play again after the game?

sebastianluther

In both cases I get paired with lower rated players.

these are your most recent games

I don't see any players outside the range, but several games without a range (or with the opponents range. the issue I suspect is when you click play again after a game, which puts out a seek that ignores your range settings.

i am having this problem. i tried -50/+600 and got matched up against a 1500 player when im about 1950 and then i tried -600/+50 and also got matched up against a 1500 player. i wish i knew how to set it so that i don't play players who are much lower rated than me.

The list doesn't show the whole picture. For the recent games I used other peoples challenges which showed the players rating. Basically every game with a player rated below 1700 was caused by this problem. And I was not using "play again".

To demonstrate the problem I made a screen recording. As you can see I clicked play while -200 was selected as lower rating range, yet I was paired with a player well below -200.

thanks. should be fixed now, at least via Play tab.

I wonder if the range setting should be remembered separately per variant (like the time control). otherwise, when you click play again after a game, you might set a range you didn't intend? or maybe that's ok?

Thank you for the fix!

For your other question: I would find it very useful to set a per variant permanent range setting. (I assume that changing the time control settings is remembered. I haven't tried.)

While it seemed to be fixed earlier today, the bug showed up again. (Game against AjAndres (1634)).

And now it got even worse. I clicked "Play" on another player's challenge and the result was that a new challenge was created for me which again ignored the rating range.

I have a hard time believing that. when you click play on an open challenge, a new queue is not created. either the queue fills up and the game starts, or it's already full and you get a 'sorry..' message.  if the player left the queue, the queue is empty and should get removed, and you should get a 'sorry this queue no longer exists'. Maybe the queue isn't removed instantly that's the only way I can see you ending up alone in the other player's queue. It should be a rare occasion if it's possible. Unless I am missing something of course.

Meanwhile I added a few things like showing the range for your pending challenges, and the range slider in the lobby. Hope this makes finding suitable opposition easier.

The slider is nice.

The original bug (rating range not respected) is still present. It didn't work for my game against dpopadc today. I didn't get to see the range for my challenge as the game started immediately after clicking "Play".

Edit: I just hit the bug again. This time I saw the challenge and it showed 1300+ (instead of the 17XX+ which I would have expected and have seen earlier today).

I noticed a problem with the slider on lobby page. I set it to some value, played a game and came back to the lobby. The slider showed the old value, but the value was not used to filter the challenges. Only after changing the slider, was the filter applied again.

I made a new observation regarding the ignored rating range:

1) If I choose "Play->Variants" in the menu and the then "Fog of War" on the right side and the click play (with the already open range setting) then it seems to reliably work.

2) If instead (what I usually do) use a bookmark to https://www.chess.com/variants/fog-of-war and then click play, then the challenge has rating range 1300+ even though the page looks the same as in case 1.

Thank you, that is very helpful. Any other cases? When you click play after the game, it should also work now I do hope.

i suspect the range gets calculated before the page has loaded your rating, and assumes 1500, -200 (is that your setting?)

My setting is -200.

I haven't used the play button after the game in some time, I'll try.

all the bugs I hope are now fixed, including one not mentioned here which was that when you change the timecontrol, the range was not adjusted to your corresp. rating.

I haven't noticed any bugs in the last days. The range settings works after going directly to https://www.chess.com/variants/fog-of-war .  Playing again after after game works too.

Thanks you!
