I got the book for Christmas, and its pretty good except for one thing: he doesn't explain the openings too well, normally just the first 4 moves.

GM Igor Smirnov's videos have helped me a lot. Granted I stopped playing chess for a few months and my rating tanked around 500 points but still.

Try counters and changing it up a little bit to through off your opponents, they might be expecting your strategy

Is the Sicilian Defense: Old variation a good opening for black?

You might not want to hear this from someone rated lower than you, but your losing streak literally started when you began playing people SIGNIFICANTLY higher rated than yourself (all of your recent daily game losses are against opponents that are close to, or over, DOUBLE your elo rating. One is over TRIPLE your elo!!!).

I'm not saying there aren't things you can do to improve (obviously there are for all of us), I'm merely pointing out that your losing streak, when observed using context, is to be expected when your average opponent is 400-500 (or over 1,000) elo points above yourself. Again, context matters.

It seems like every time I 'study', it's been something that has been studied to death and I lose my skirt and I do better with the element of being out of order.

Just play consistently and review your games, and you will get better.
