The USCF uses a modification of the Elo system, where the K factor varies and there are bonus points for superior performance in a tournament. The USCF classifies players according to their rating (Just & Burg 2003:259–73). USCF ratings are generally 50 to 100 points higher than the FIDE equivalents (Just & Burg 2003:112).

Rattus

Hi all,

This is the first group I have joined in chess. I am a class D player with very little education in this beautiful game and entered the tournament vs Asia. Unfortunately they have matched me against a class B player so there is very little chance I will be able to win this first match, but I will do my best!

Any tips on how to play against such an overwhelming force would be appreciated i.e. should I be trying to trade pieces with him or is defence a better option?
