That's like saying doing practice drills in basketball don't matter, because only the actual games matter and not the drills... If that's true, why does every basketball team practice drills?

Because the practice drills are applied to actual games, which helps the players win the games.

I can tell you as an actual fact, doing puzzles has helped me beat much stronger engines in games than I was beating before.
