If you could have one GM’s skill, what would it be?

If you could magically have just one skill a great GM has, what would it be?

For me, it would be Magnus Carlson’s vision with the knight. I’ll never forget a game he played where he was in a totally lost position, about to lose his queen, then he made a move with a knight, then another, then all of a sudden he had his opponent in a brilliant trap that his opponent and nobody spectating saw coming. Now when I play I try my best to use the knight like that, because that opened my eyes to the power in using the knight strategically.

Murphy’s creativity and Fischer’s puzzle solving skills were a close second, but felt a bit vague.

I would want the skill to drink 100 water bottles in 30 minutes!

Cheeky. But what single skill do you think one of them have that you could benefit from and actually implement in your games?

the berlin draw

but seriously, i'd want to be able to calculate a bit faster, like fischer, kasparov, hikaru, and pretty much every super-gm

I doubt every GM is a fast calculator. It seems to me some take sooo long for a single move while others see it right away

Intuition.

Nice one. Even at my level I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t play the best move because I didn’t trust my intuition. A very valuable skill to have

I trust mine... Thats why I play a ton of blitz...

The ability to think through your moves clearly. Most of my blunders are a result of rushing through my moves so I would want to slow down and process every move

Positional play to set up the perfect attack or increase an advantage.

Positions are such a huuuuuge part of higher level play.

Um positions are part of all levels...

I mean superior positions, as you say focusing more on positional play rather than just moving pieces

I mean that's basically the thing that could get me to 2000 because my tactics are good enough soooo

Romans_5_3-5

the skill to be a gm

assassin3752

having the ability to grind and win in equally looking endgames

OrphanGenerator

I want the ability to see the board thoroughly. This, in turn, would allow me to see better and more creative moves whilst negating whatever potential ideas my opponent have.
