So I just played a 24 hr game in a tournament and the person started out Rank 1293 I was 876.  It was a hard fought battle but I won.

Now what I don't understand is the person I was playing against lost 238 rank points and I only gained 12 how is this? why was mine so low and his was so high?

Your opponent has only played 3 Daily games total, including yours, and has a very high rating deviation (RD) value of 233. You have played 71 games and have a fairly low RD value of 54.

A high RD value means the rating is very uncertain so the rating swings for games are fairly large. A low RD value means your rating is more certain (more accurate) and your rating swings will be much lower.  The Glicko rating system is designed with that RD to more quickly converge a player to an appropriate rating based on historical performance. RD values drop with more games and can increase if there is a long time between games.

OK that makes sense thanks Martin

Thank you Martin, I found this information useful as well.  So, the RD is very similar to the idea of SD in statistics. happy.png
