   Hi,

does anyone know if there are any chess training apps for the iPod Touch/iPad being developed? Software for training and learning endings, tactics, strategy etc.

I've found that there a re some wonderful apps learning avail, but none for training elements of chess e.g. focusing on just endgames, tactics or postional concepts.

I'm a bit confused about what you might be seeking...  tChess Pro, Chess Openings Pro, and Openings focus on openings, whereas the Chess.com app and ChessQuest have all the tactics-training a person could want.

Can you name a web-based or installable piece of software as an example of the sort of thing you're not able to find for iPhone/iPad?

Hi,

i re-read my post,i think it was a bit too concise.

Yes,i have tChess Pro,ChessGenius and a few others including Chess.com for playing games already.I got most of them based on the type of info i found on the forums here,a few other forums and from reading reviews.

The training apps ,or software, i mean would be independent of internet connection 'cos my intention is to be able to do exercises & learn via interactive software whilst travelling on municipal transport-which includes the metro systems here where there is no internet connection, for the most part. Also be compatible enough to reside on a device that can be held in one hand(for rush hour bus journeys) and fit into a trouser pocket?

Use the travelling time rather than waste it.Can put the app with the lectures and audiobooks on one device.Hence why i was wondering is a dedicated tactics exercise app might be in the works for the iPod.

I'm not fussed whether it's on my iPod or on a reasonable pocket pc,so long as i can access the knowledge and get going.

I appreciate the reply.

I think ChessQuest could be what you're looking for, it's a great offline tactics trainer.

Hi,

i find that using the variations option that is available for most of the exercises helps a lot.Just tap on the notation tabs with the symbol on the left hand side (in case you haven't seen it.Please ignore my suggestion if you have used them already).

I can offer is what has helped me to date-

-read Nunn's bk 'Learn Chess Tactics',and a few others, working through the exercises. There's a widget for the Mac dashboard that has both Reinfeld's 1001 books plus a few more for interactive play,so i got that. It's free and good to play through.

 - Nunn,Seirawan and other on tactics books helped a lot, plus as many  online articles with advice on the different ways of doing tactics by Mssrs Heisman,Silman,Yusupov,a host of bloggers and Susan Polgar's book as i could find. What i found helpful was that the actual books dealt with each tactical motif individually-so you'd drill e.g. just knight forks, then forks in general.I could understand better and build a foundation to work off.Silman has a quote about doing 50 knight forks somewhere that is apt.

ChessQuest is good imo.I wasn't sure because i really wanted a specifically themed way of interactive play a la the convekta software especially like Comprehensive Chess Endings.Regardless, sometimes you don't get exactly what you want but something else can still bring you some good,so i'm quite content. This app has been very helpful and i am grateful for being pointed towards it.It's variations options and features are helping to teach me.I actually looked up GM Yudasin and learn a lot just from following that path.

If someone made one for solely for endings like CCE i'd get it,or maybe like the Dvoretsky,Averbakh and Raetsky playable ebooks.

Maybe some of that will help,if only to share some ideas.Have a nice weekend and thanks again to the guys who suggested the app.

(I got the 'Mates' apps too.Good fun)

Wanted to mention a guy called David Small who's review and explainations on learning are on amazon.com. I found his stuff informative too.

iChessPack HD (iPad) and iChess Pack (iPhone/iPod) has training feature with FICS - lectures, endgame, puzzles, tactics.

Ichesspack hd is horrible and the developer andrejcher does not respond to any questions concerning problems or requests
