Well its simple. Every game which involves a dice is haram. In one occasion, one of a game similar to chess in which peices were litterely stone pagan god statues. They used to fight which hod comes on top. That game is said to be haram. Chess without gamble is a very different game in the modern world. It dont involve any such statues as peices, i would say hence it is not haram yet since it involves time and a person can skip namaz for this, i would say it is rather not halal nor haram. Its in makrooh(i think thats the only word to describe it although i am not fully sure about using this word). This is it.

Yes, brother shared a good point. Even sports can be haram if you gamble on them or they prevent you from completing your farz prayers etc. Anything that distracts from your religious duties can be seen as haram. This is my pinion please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

I have a ques, chess wasn't muh popular back then. muslim caliphs r the one who made it famous and it eventually reached europe by us. if it was haram then why did they play it? they were caliphs after all...
