Is money the root of all evil?

Hi everyone.

How many times have we heart that money is the root of all evil? I've heard it more than a few times but it didn't make sense to me. As believers who believe the Holy Bible is the Word of God, we know there is a text in the Holy Bible that sounds a lot like this.

Consider 1 Timothy 6:10 from the beloved King James Bible. "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Well, this certainly makes more sense but does it square with our experience and with reality? If we are honest, we recognize people do evil things even when they are not motivated by the love of money. So do we reject the text? The answer is that we look more deeply into the text and into how it was translated from the original languages. You can look this verse up in the Greek Interlinear Bible on the Internet on Biblegateway.com.

The New International Version, a more recent versions of the Holy Bible, translate this verse as: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." This translation fits the Greek Interlinear translation. The word order changes but the correct translation replaces "the root" with "a root" and a correctly-translated alternative to "all evil" is "all kinds of evil."

We see here how the more accurate translation of the original text clears up the problem. This version squares with our experience and with reality. We know the love of money is behind all kinds of evil. So is pride. So is coveting and a number of other sins.

Sometimes we run across problems where what we read in the Holy Bible is difficult to understand. Peter mentions that Paul wrote some things that are difficult to understand. We are admonished to study God's Word to properly handle it.

I opened this forum as a place for others to post what Scriptures they read that didn't make sense to them and didn't seem right and how they resolved the issue through studying Scripture and looking deeper into the translation of the original language.

"He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction." (2 Peter 3:16, NIV)

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV)

Thank you John. I very much like this post and with the examples and explanation of what is actually being stated through The GOD Breathed Word. Blessed me much to read. The LORD Willing, and when time permits, I will hope to share something.

Hi Paul. Thank you for your encouragement. I know you love the Lord and His Word.

There is something that Otavio and I shared on notes on our respective pages a couple of weeks or so ago and of which I then said I would share further. And I suppose that through your forum post, John, this is an opportunity to share it. I wrote most almost two weeks ago, apart from what is something of an explanation in an introduction for the purpose of clarity.

Though in this instance it is not so much of not understanding a passage of Scripture in the sense of being without understanding, and so seeking through prayerful studying of Scripture and/or meditating on a particular Scripture. Neither is it understanding revealed through and when reading a portion of Scripture which had not been understood before, but is of seeing something when reading Scripture one may have read before a hundred times, but on that one hundred and first time the mind is opened to just notice something not noticed before, and then where that can then lead to.

In my experience since being Saved through my confession of faith in The SON Of GOD, JESUS CHRIST, there are times when the mind can be opened to understand a Scripture where the understanding is an absolute definition of what that particular Scripture is stating, or, it can be that on reading Scripture it may prompt another particular Scripture to mind, which may lead to another Scripture, and as many times as this may happen until something is seen which was not seen before. Or, it can be that on opening the Bible, the page opened to speaks something straight away. And these can pertain to many different things, yet all through the Spiritual perspective in contrast to the flesh, and will be without contradiction held within The Holy Scriptures.

In this instance I share, after opening my Bible, and opening to and where my eyes met with the page, Acts 2:17, and reading,

'And it shall be in the last days,' GOD Says, 'That I Will Pour Forth of MY SPIRIT Upon all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall Prophesy, And your young men shall see Visions, And your old men shall dream Dreams; Even Upon MY bondslaves, both men and women, I Will in those days Pour Forth of MY SPIRIT And they shall Prophesy. 'And I Will Grant Wonders in the sky above, And Signs on the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 'The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before The Great And Glorious Day Of The LORD Shall Come. 'And it shall be, that everyone who calls on The Name Of The LORD Shall Be Saved.' Acts 2:17-21,

And whilst thinking upon what I had just read, my eyes wandered over the page to the end of The Gospel account of the Apostle John, and my eyes went to John 21:24-25 and began reading,

...This is the Disciple who bears witness of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his witness is True.

And there are also many other things which JESUS Did, which if they were Written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the Books which were Written. John 21:24-25,

and it struck me what John is stating, and which I had not seen before in almost eight years of reading my Bible, and however many times I may have read these verses, And there are also many other things which JESUS Did, which if they were Written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the Books which were Written.; The LORD JESUS CHRIST Did so very much more than we have account of in The Holy Scriptures,

Many other signs therefore JESUS also Performed in the presence of the Disciples, which are not written in this Book; but these have been Written that you may believe that JESUS Is The CHRIST, The SON Of GOD; and that believing (pisteuo; to believe, also to be persuaded of, and hence, to place confidence in, to trust, signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon, not mere credence) you may have Life In HIS Name. John 20:30-31

yet of course, still we are Given all we need to know, and with all we need to know means that GOD Freely Gives us all of the answers we need, along with Knowledge of what we do not need to know or concern ourselves with, and all in Perfect Measure (Romans 8:32, James 1:12-27),

The words of wise men are like goads, and masters of collections are like Well-Driven nails; They are Given By ONE SHEPHERD. But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion is wearying to the body.

The conclusion, when all has been heard: fear GOD and keep HIS Commandments, because this applies to every person. For GOD Will Bring every act to Judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.Ecclesiastes 12:11-14.

In the Time of HIS Flesh The LORD JESUS CHRIST Did so many things, that if they were to have been written in detail, then we know by this testimony of this man, John, who was an eye witness and a faithful witness to and of all these things, that in his opinion the world itself would not contain their written records. It can only have been be a staggering amount. And yet, still, HE was rejected by HIS Own; John 1:9-13, just as The GOD Breathed Word Prophesied and Through HIS Holy Prophets (Psalm 22, Isaiah 53).

It then showed to me, even more so amplified, the degree of unbelief in man, and the extent and denials man will go to, and what he will present for his case, despite any overwhelming evidence presented which actually proves to show his ways and beliefs to be wrong, and so contrary to Truth; Truth as Meant And Interpreted By GOD (Matthew 9:13, Luke 4:18-19, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20 - 2:3), to merely maintain what he himself wants to choose and will choose to believe. And all this, absolutely with a complete free will to do so; and in accordance with what Scripture States, and even States of such as these. And as it was then, so it is today.

And in all this, man does so that he may continue on his own course through life (Proverbs 16:24-33), and even will do it seeing it as the way of preserving self and so also why the preserving of the beliefs and moral standards of self choosing, yet all the while being practiced through pride, arrogance, hypocrisy, in ignorance to The Truth; The Truth Which Saves; The Truth which clearly states to believe in GOD Alone, for obedience of faith, warnings against denying The Truth and with the warnings the examples of disobedience, examples and clear statement to what constitutes, before A Holy GOD, to be walking in disobedience and with it also the very real consequences of not being of the Elect; that is, not being of those who truly believed in HIM, whose faith grew, and grew stronger, by faith and towards faith, through trials and tribulation By The Blood Of The LAMB, In HIS Strength, according to HIS Purpose Which HE Purposed In The BELOVED, enduring to the end, whenever and however their "end" may come (1 Thessalonians 4:13 - 5:11): The Called And Chosen And faithful.

Many are Called, few Chosen (Matthew 22:1-14, Revelation 17:14).

"...now shall not GOD Bring about Justice For HIS Elect, who cry to HIM day and night, and will HE delay long over them? "I Tell you that HE Will Bring About Justice for them speedily (Hebrews 4:10-16, James 1:2-8, 1 Peter 1:13 - 2:25, Psalm 37:1-11). However, when The SON Of Man Comes, will HE find faith on the earth?"... Luke 17:1 - 18:17 (18:7-8).

GOD Alone Is Just And The Justifier Of the one who has faith in JESUS.

And man yet still will preach what he will preach and believe what he will believe, even from The Very Word Which Warns From Heaven, of distorting the Holy Scriptures, of introducing destructive heresies, actually denying our only MASTER And LORD, JESUS CHRIST, and they cannot see that it is what they will do which betrays them and shows their beliefs for what they truly are, and their deeds deliver them over to death; along with those who will believe in them, and will follow them and in their example.

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off The Kingdom Of Heaven from men; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel about on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. Matthew 23:13 & v15.

We are always to remember to be mindful that in all circumstances and situations, evil communion, bad companionship corrupts to cause Godly morality to perish (1 Corinthians 15:33-34, 1 John 2:15-29).

In my thoughts on John 21:24-25, some of which I share here, as well as things which further come to mind on the matter now typing, my eyes wandered back over to where I had finished reading at Acts 2:21, and I began to read again,

"Men of Israel, listen to these words: JESUS The Nazarene, A Man Attested To you By GOD with Miracles And Wonders And Signs Which GOD Performed Through HIM in your midst, just as you yourselves know this - Delivered Up By The Predetermined Plan And Foreknowledge Of GOD, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put to death... Acts 2:22-24.

Here, what stood out was that The GOD Breathed Word determines, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put to death.

Those Peter stands before speaking, he names them guilty, along with those whom Peter, speaking In The SPIRIT, deems to be, 'godless men'.

These who Peter determines, In The SPIRIT, to be godless men are those who were the religious rulers of the day. Those the majority of the people revered, respected, and even feared to speak against, who were accepted as Godly authority among men, and yet the very same Shown By GOD Through JESUS CHRIST to be hypocrites, whitewashed tombs clean in appearance outwardly yet inwardly unclean, Spiritually dead, those quick to administer their own precepts, their own doctrines, forsaking The Commandments Of GOD and applying their own ways to the people over GOD'S Commandments. And those who deemed themselves worthy and placed themselves in the positions they attained to, however they may have attained to them.

When HE Had Disarmed (the Greek, apekduomai; to rid of or free wholly oneself) the rulers and authorities, HE Made a public display of them, having Triumphed over them through HIM. Colossians 2:15.

And it is no different today in the world and in The Church, where godless men, hypocrites, place themselves in positions of authority in HIS Body, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by false doctrine; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted, yet doing all in The Name of The LORD JESUS CHRIST (Exodus 20:7). Yet GOD Still Triumphs over them Through JESUS CHRIST, to them who see; to the one who will truly follow JESUS CHRIST and the teaching of the Apostles Of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. (Jude). The faith Of The Gospel.

...Therefore HE was Saying To them, "What is The Kingdom of GOD like, and to what shall I Compare It? "It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree; and the birds of the air nested in its branches." And again HE Said, "To what shall I Compare The Kingdom of GOD? "It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of meal, until it was all leavened." Luke 13:18-21.

Leaven is reference to sin. 'A little leaven leavens the whole lump'. (Galatians 5:5-10).

...All these things JESUS Spoke To the multitudes (forewarned is forearmed) in parables, and HE did not Speak to them without a parable, so that what was Spoken Through the Prophet might be Fulfilled, Saying, "I Will Open MY Mouth in parables; I Will Utter things Hidden since The Foundation Of the world." Matthew 13:34-35

...And as soon as HE was alone, HIS followers, along with the twelve, began asking HIM about the parables. And HE was Saying To them, "To you has been Given The Mystery of The Kingdom Of GOD; but those who are outside get everything in parables, in order that while seeing, they may see and not perceive; and while hearing, they may hear and not understand lest they return and be forgiven." And HE Said To them, "Do you not understand this parable? And how will you understand all the parables? Mark 4:10-13

Then HE left the multitudes, and went into the house. And HIS Disciples came to HIM, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field." And HE Answered and Said, "The one who sows the Good Seed is The SON Of Man, and the field is the world; and the Good Seed, these are the sons Of The Kingdom; and the tares are the sons Of the evil; and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and The Harvest is The End of the age; and the reapers are angels. "Therefore just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at The End of the age. "The SON Of Man will Send Forth HIS angels, and they will gather out of HIS Kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "Then the Righteous will shine forth as the sun in The Kingdom Of their FATHER. He who has ears, let him hear... Matthew 13:36-43.

Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that The LORD, after Saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently Destroyed those who did not believe. Jude :5. Those spoken of here as being Destroyed By The LORD are not those of Egypt The LORD Destroyed in their pursuit of Israel, but are those of Israel, GOD'S People who did not actually believe GOD (and in another place of what constitutes standing in the Grace Of GOD: Romans 11:16 - 12:2 [16:20]). Jude writes this warning, In The SPIRIT, for GOD'S People to hear, from then 'til now and to The Day of Eternity.

"All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off, But The Word Of The LORD Abides Forever." And this is The Word Which was preached to you.

From Acts 2:22, do you see what happens when bad influence is not present so that it is the dominating factor, (however it will manifest itself to the point it manifests itself so as to cause not to hear), so that Truth can be heard for faith? Romans 10:17. When Truth is freely spoken, sought, and freely received? Mark 16:15-16. And it all comes down to the heart. Those same people, some of whom who will have feared and could not see, who blindly followed godless men and called for HIS crucifixion, and so also being numbered with those godless men who rejected and nailed JESUS CHRIST to a cross, putting HIM to death, Through Which GOD HIMSELF Put End to the agony of death, Making The Way For all who will believe HIM Through HIS MESSIAH.

And now, after what The MOST HIGH HIMSELF Had Permitted to take place (Genesis 3:15, John 18:12-14, John 19:11, 1 Corinthians 1:18 - 2:9) and now Removed to any point it is Removed and in Due Time according to Times and Epochs Which The FATHER Has Fixed By HIS Own Authority (Acts 1:6-8, Acts 16:6, Mark 16:15-16, Romans 11)*, of these same souls, who will have known through the preceeding fifty days since HIS crucifixion, through things seen and heard (Matthew 27:50-54, Mark 15:37-39, Luke 23:44-49, Luke 24:13-27 ), they now hear Peter speaking In The SPIRIT, and in Acts 2:37 Scripture tells us,

Now when they heard, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter to them, "Repent, and let each of you be Baptised In The Name Of JESUS CHRIST for the Forgiveness of your sins; and you shall Receive The Gift Of The HOLY SPIRIT. "For this Promise is For you and your children, and For all who are far off, as many as The LORD our GOD Shall Call To HIMSELF." And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be Saved from this perverse generation!" So then, those who had received his word were Baptised; and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they were continually devoting themselves to the Apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer... Acts 2:37-42.

In all of our struggles we would do well to consider and be mindful of such a Godly man as Job, laid bare in order to see with his own eyes just as he is before A Holy GOD, and Restored with increase (James 5:7-12, 2 Peter 2:7 - 3:18).

Luke 12. Mark 8:27-38, Mark 10:29-31. 2 Corinthians 2:14 - 7:1. 1 Peter 2:13-25.

GOD'S Grace Is Sufficient; Saved By The Blood Of The LAMB; Grace Through faith In The SON Of GOD, JESUS MESSIAH.

I love how Peter writes, so full of Grace, This is now, Beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the Holy Prophets and The Commandment Of The LORD And SAVIOUR by your Apostles. 2 Peter 3:1-2.

Read both his letters in this knowledge, that his words, written In The SPIRIT, and so, True Of GOD, are words written to be known, and spoken, and spoken to be written on tablets of human hearts, not with ink, but With The SPIRIT Of The Living GOD (2 Corinthians 3:1-6) that they are known not to be forgotten, and so Peter writes for us to remember (Revelation 12:7-17 [v11], Revelation 14:12), lest we be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, to wake fully the 'found true when tested mind', that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the Holy Prophets and The Commandment Of The LORD And SAVIOUR by your Apostles.

And Paul admonishes, But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations (debating), knowing that they produce quarrels. And The LORD'S bondservant must not be quarrelsome (must not partake in what produces controversy, fighting, striving, contention), but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness (humility:- meekness) correcting those who are in opposition (Proverbs 25:11-14), if perhaps GOD May Grant them repentance leading to the Knowledge of The Truth, and they may come to their senses from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will... 2 Timothy 2:23-26.

* Times and Epochs; Durations and Seasons do not have bearing on our own free will throughout durations and seasons. The Righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:16-17, Hebrews 4:14-16), through which GOD Gives HIS HOLY SPIRIT (Acts 5:32, 1 Peter 1:2, 2 Peter 1:2).

"Let The Name Of GOD Be Blessed Forever And Ever, For Wisdom And Power Belong To HIM. "And It Is HE WHO Changes the times and the epochs; HE Removes kings and Establishes kings; HE Gives Wisdom To wise men, And Knowledge To men of understanding. "It Is HE WHO Reveals The Profound And Hidden Things; HE Knows what is in the darkness, And The Light Dwells With HIM. Daniel 2:20-22.
