Only if he's called Forbin.
Is the knight still considered a good first move?

I'm not a huge fan of it personally.
Glad somebody knows what they're doing. We're going to need to be on our game.

I wouldn't lead with the knight, They don't get into the middle of the board (to control space) fast enough. We should start by bringing out a pawn or two (in the D or E files/columns) and then bring out the knights to defend those pawns. That's a fairly standard show opener. If we want to lead with Fluffhead type opening we pull the king's Pawn out then immediately start attacking with our bishop and queen.

It's a move, but E4 and D4 are considered slightly stronger first moves. E4 is considered the most forcing opening line.

Great stuff.

i usually move pawns out on the queen side first, and try to get the middle kinda beefy
This is my vote.

No. Kind of a weak opening. I'm a fan of the English, but I don't expect that to happen in vote chess.

Approach the Knight with caution...
That's pure gold right there... thank you.
I've been playing a lot of knight openings of late (as white), it's strong in the sense that you control 4 positions after that opening move, but I agree with some above that the standard pawn reply on e or d makes the most sense, especially playing black.

It depends on what the level of the other team is.

Dude, it's Phish and they play chess. It's like facing Pavement in Scrabble. Good Luck!

Well, what if they are out of practice and really suck now?
