I just heard the news that Campo has died. We lost a great man of chess. I have lots of fond memories of him. I remember a story he told when they were in the 1980 Malta Olympiad. He ended up being Puloy's (IM Ramos) roommate. Puloy felt lucky because Pocamps was hardly there in their flat because he was a very busy man. One night, he came to the flat and slept there. There was only one bed in their room and Campo and Puloy had to share it. It was a big bed so there was enough space for the two of them. The problem was, Campo sleeps naked! When Puloy realized that Pocamps was naked, he just stayed on the very edge of his side of the bed and never moved an inch. IM Ramos later confided that he did not want to move because he was afraid he might accidentally touch something... hahaha. Campo on the other hand thought, Puloy was the best sleeper he had ever met because he was so quiet and never moved an inch during his sleep. If he slept at all!!! Laughing

Ayos yan. Ibibigay ko na sagot dito sa puzzle dahil wala pang sagot. Bulok na ito. Ihanda mo na ang preskiting mong puzzle.

Hahaha... maganda nga yan kaya lang baka sabihin e self-centered ako! hihihi

Reti, I've decided na "Knights of Campomanes" ang team name namin; tribute to the late Pocamps.

For the longest time e sa Knights of Columbus ang office ng PCF when Campo was running it. We spent a lot of time there and played a lot of games. With that in mind e... plus because of his passing... yan na nga ang team namin. Official na yan!

The answer to the last puzzle is 1. Bd2 with the threat of 2. Re1+, followed by 3. Bc3#

Happy Birthday to Mysqovich! I know you love reading. Having that in mind, I am trying to think of a short story that I could write here that is of relevance. Maybe something will come later. Enjoy your day, Sir.

I am really tired of Campo bashing, especially from people who never even met the man, let alone know a tiny bit about him. I try to stay away from such slander but every now and then, I can't escape from it. I remember a happy moment with Pocamps... I will share it with you so that you can have a glimpse of what he was like.

Back in the days when Celebrity Sports Plaza was quite exclusive and relatively new, Campo had an office there. He never really used it for any business purposes but just basically as a stock room for boxes of chessbooks and other chess related documents. One day, he called us up to help him move things around because the boxes were starting to clutter the office space. Eugene, myself and Rico came to his rescue. After putting the place in order, it looked nice and more like a real office. We ate lunch afterwards and he just signed the bill. I thought, hmmm.

Later, when we were back in the office, I made a joke. I told him that the place was a great place to train and study because it was quiet and there were tons of books there that can readily be used. And then I added, "The signing privilege is not bad, too!" and then gave him the cute eyes look. We had a laugh after that... but not Campo. He just broke out a slight grin and said,  "Okay!" I told him that I was just kidding but he just called somebody on the phone and before I knew it, I was given all the member privileges, including the signing on all expenses!

I'd go there and swim, play pool, bowl and eat... sometimes I'd study, too! Laughing It really was a peaceful place to study chess or anything for that matter. Sometimes, I would bring my cousin and brothers along so they could swim for free while I was training. A few times, I had my girlfriend come over.

One day, while we were at the PCF office at the Knights of Columbus in Intramuros, Campo was checking up on his bills. Looking at the Celebrity Sports Plaza bills, he gave that nasty look at me. "You've been bringing girls there!" he accused. "How do you know?" I replied. He said that the restaurant orders had some food and drinks that only ladies would order! Busted! He still let me use the place, though. Such a generous man, Pocamps.

Vishy is still the World champ. Topa looked to me like he was out of it in the last game... as if he was clueless of the position. First, he fianchettoed his king and had a strange set-up of pawns at e3, f3 and g3 with his rook at f2. In effect, a castled king on the second rank! It looks solid per se but it is always fragile.

Then, he maneuvered his knight from d2 to b3, then to a5! Suddenly, I thought the sneaky devil knew what he was doing! The knight was actually strong at a5. He was going to shift the Rook at a3 to c3 and pressure the c-pawn. With some ideas of b4, Rfc2, Nb3... whichever seemed fit to the occassion.

Then, he moved Nc4. What?? All along, he just wanted to block that stupid c-pawn! He was clueless. Then Vishy played e5!  The tables have turned. I said to myself, If Topa plays e4, his brain is off today! Well, that's just what he played. Vishy automatically moved f5, of course... and Gatus entered the premises. Ruben was smiling. Smile
