Joining a Chess Club

I have been thinking of joining a Chess club recently but i am probably going to wait until next year, I am hoping it will help with my game and there will be other individuals to discuss chess with face to face.

Has anyone in the group been a member of any type of chess club?

What are the Pro's and are there any Con's of joining one?

Thanks

I've been a member of the same chess club from my 8th till my 21th. The Pro's are:
-Playing chess regurarly OTB keeps you sharp
-I still have a lot of those people on facebook and consider some of them as friends, even now I am not a member of the club anymore
-Playing chess OTB can be quite fun since it's totally different from online

Con's:
-My club was more than an hour away from my house
-Sometimes you don't want to play but you're obliged to, both club competition as club versus club matches

I belong to a club with about 120 members. It's great! We meet on Saturdays and one evening during the week if anyone can make it. You will learn so much playing people over the board. In our club, you make if you can! No cons at all. :)  We have members from 10 to 82 years of age. We play all kinds of time controls and have a tournament about every 5 weeks. We put a few bucks in and the winners of different rating groups get trophies or can take the cash if needed. What I love most is meeting the different people. Some are lawyers, some work on garbage trucks. Guess who wins more? :) Very nice people. I hope you do it. :)

When you contact them they will most likely invite you to play some games and see how you like it. So should you for some reason not like it you atleast tried.

I imagine so its not something that i am taking too seriously, If it doesn't work out then i won't be bothered (can't see why it wouldn't though), just wanted to meet some like minded people you want to play and discuss chess
