Keyif's Journal

Hello All,

I have been remiss in my journal but will try to be better.

I have been playing on and off all my life but have been trying to really improve lately.

Today I met with FM Eric Schiller and tried to come up with a plan. I will be working on the opening principles. Different than what is usually considered the normal.

1. Control the Center.

2. Castle

3. Connect the Rooks

4. Aim the Rooks.

We also discussed the openings of Tarrasch and Kings Indian and that I should stick with the Dragon as it seems to work for me.

Tonight I will be doing some problems and tactics on the trainer.

Today. I am closing some games. If they are hopeless resigning. I plan to start my new games using the principle that Eric taught me.

Am also looking at lines of sight more (cross roads) trying to find the check or check threat and set up an attack towards it.

Ok so far this week was ok.

I practiced with CT Art 3.0 and it is very good software to help with tactics. I really enjoy it.

I had a league match this week and well it started out ok. :) But at move 19 I made a anti-positional move and messed up. Se below for the game.

Studied with FM Schiller on Saturday. Went over my game and discussed strategy for the Chicago Open in May.

I am using Opening Trainer for openings and CT Art for tactics. Reading the Chess Artist for history.

My daughter played today at the VA and she won! It was an okay game but a win is a win.

Hi Shehan!

In your game, if you play 19...Ne4 instead of Kf8 I think you might very well be better...or even winning. White can play 20.Be6+ Kh8 21.Qe1 (only way to hold on to the rook) But after 21...Rc2 you have equal material and a much more active position. It could even be so that white gets smashed because of his constrained pieces on the Kingside. Just a thought.Very inventive opening play though!

Thank you for the feedback. The move felt wrong and well it was. I probably should have moved cxd4 in the opening as that follows the standard Dragon.

Ok yesterday I met up with accord2 and knightyknight555 from Chess.com and we played a few games. I was victorious in them all. I then went over with them the Rook and King, Two Bishops and Queen and King endings. I also showed them how to get a passed pawn in 3 on 3 setup. Over all it was fun and a learning experience. Below is one game I figured I would share.

A chess.com meet-up sounds like great fun!

3..cxd4 (or 3...Nf6 4.Nc3 cxd4) is definitely the normal move. Nc6 feels like a more uphill struggle, but I doubt it could be considered refuted. Nice miniature above. You could have played the same idea one move earlier (11.Bc6 instead of 11.0-0)

Today had a meeting with IM Khmelnitski. We went over some games and I will be posting some of the positions we disussed.

Wow! You're messing with a lot of heavies! Nice!

I am trying to win my section of the Chicago Open. I am spending an hour a day on training at a minimum.

I wish you all the luck, Keyif.  I know you'll be the one to beat in your section!  One of these days I want to take a trip to Chicago and play in the Chicago open.  I hope to meet you there!

What section / category do you guys play in the Chicago Open? I am unrated so I am thinking of entering in a smaller event before getting bashed up by the heavyweights. So far the closest I've ever been to a chess tournament was at Hyatt Regency in Chicago where our SAT prep group had a meeting while there was a Midwest or Illinois State tournament going on in one of the ballrooms. I could hear only Russian in the hall!

Last night I played in a league match against a 1780 rated person. I lost but the game went well. No major blunders, a few poor choices but a decent showing. Some moves were great, some not. :)

Hello Study Buddies,

I have been studying the Vienna game and figured I would share with you what I have learned so far. Have fun and look at the variations. The ECO code is C25-29 for those of you wanting to dig deeper. Make sure to look at the move list for the Variations on it.

I think Nc6 is much stronger than Nf6. Of course even in Nf6 line, black can choose a better 3rd move than just take the pawn. With Nc6 I think Black's knight won't come under immediate assault. so I would still say 2...Nc6 better than 2...Nf6

I agree and there is a line of the Vienna that covers that I may have not put it in the line. Check the moves list to see.
