League Reset (Proposal of an Idea)

Good Morning/Afternoon everyone reading this article.

I have an idea to help on improving the feature of league.

As you may know, in many different games there are also leagues. In which league reset every certain time and everyone starts from 0 and climb their way up to the highest league.

I would like if chess.com staffs would take this in consideration because

  • Leagues were fun, when they were introduced, there was a competitiveness between the low rated people like me. (It was like grinding it for trophies). Did you remember when the games played when leagues were introduced, it was huge.
  • Now the leagues are dead, it is like no one is caring about.
  • For low rated people like me, this is a fun way to play to grind the game.

After that when people start playing leagues, they would like to play chess, then they will see that they want to improve, and you may know what they are going to do so it just a way that the members would also like and chess.com as a company would also benefit their selves.

This is just a rough sketch that I made and would gladly like if any staffs or moderator could speak this to chess.com team.

Leagues reset every 6 months

2 Month people will be grinding to reach legend league.

1 division of champion league will remain and this will be the rewarding stage

Just to be rewarding the grind, you can introduce some prize

This is just my idea:

Top 50: $100

Top 25: $200

Top 10: $500

Top 5: $1000

Top 1: $3000

Total amount $15,000

I would say that this is an incredible way to invest your money.

Thank you for reading, I would be happy if you take this in consideration.

Regards,

  Dharshan

This is good because now Legend league arena is dead and it would keep fresh the leagues (maybe for 2 month people will grind leagues and from month 3 to 6, legend arena will be back).

Legend arena was removed I think because there started to be too much people in legend league so it would be possible to bring back that because now there will be less people in it.

I don't know if chess.com would be willing to pay that much money, but the rest of it sounds great! Many other competitive games have league resets so your idea makes sense and has been used before with great results.

this is true.

In my view (don't take this as an official statement of chess.com, it's just my personal opinion), I think the leagues need significantly reworked before running a significant prize event again.

Last time round we had intense competition to get to the top and compete for prizes. This resulted in some undesirable situations:

* People playing an unhealthy number of games

* People sandbagging to get lower-rated opponents (this led to bans, but it still happened)

* Strong players seeking out low-rated opposition - even if they didn't sandbag to get it

* Premium members playing large numbers of simultaneous games (which inevitably ended up harming their rating - in effect sandbagging, even if not intentional)

The system rewarded quantity over quality, so we got quantity, along with various methods of manipulating the system.

A reset is an idea to consider, but it doesn't really address the major problems. I think the system needs reworked to tilt the balance towards quality rather than just quantity.

Some ideas:

* More points for wins against stronger players (when compared to your recent peak rating - perhaps in the last month or last quarter).

* Fewer points for wins against weaker players (when compared to your recent peak rating) - against sufficiently lower-rated players, no points at all.

* Diminishing returns in each time control. Every time you win a game in a rating category (rapid/blitz/bullet) you get slightly fewer league points. This encourages people to play a mix of time controls. It also means that getting lots of wins against weak players will have limited value; the best way to get a lot of points is to win games against strong players. Quality over quantity.

* Once the system is well established, relegation between leagues. You should have something on your profile or in your stats showing the highest league you've ever reached, but you shouldn't be able to just stay there forever. To stay up, you'll need to stay competitive.

* Because this system works totally differently from the existing system, a reset might be a good idea.

I'm 99% sure you can reset your league

It's already a thing

I don't think you should make it with prize money

It might promote staying up all night, trying to get 1st place (When in Champion)

And it's the same as the league now

I think that the league should be redesigned

Avatar of How36

If Chess.com doesn't want to reset and change the entirety of the league system, it may be good to implement a form of club leagues - leagues exclusive to your club. This would allow certain rules to be established to the admins liking and would promote competition among smaller groups. Also, a club league for the official Chess.com club could feature all of the cool reworks mentioned in the earlier comments - prizes, 6 month reset, etc. This is just an idea for a compromise if Chess.com isn't keen on doing a full change of the leagues. (I also wouldn't mind if this was added in addition to the league reset, but I know Chess.com devs are busy people, so this is just an idea if the original plan doesn't work.)

I very much approve the ideas of MSDharshan with the prizes and the league reset. I also definitely like MGleason's ideas of making the leagues more fair.
