no 5. d4 in the Ruy Lopez is considered the Mackenzie variation
actually the exchange lopez is not too bad
The Scotch is also something I've been considering
scotch is pretty theory heavy
well- I mean the lesser known openings are not really that good, but it least the Scotch is less known than the Italian or Spanish.
Would argue the exchange Lopez Nc3 is the least well known of them and can basically be forced every time while having a complicated game but ok
I actually second the Ponziani, it's really interesting and a lot of players don't know how to deal with it
