Lesson Learning Forum

Hello I will be teaching the lesson about isolated pawns by NM Robert Ramirez. I will be showing you a game by Botvinnik.

The best way to pressure an isolated pawn is to stack up on it. Even if you cannot capture it eventually, all of their pieces will be tied to it. You can see that we stack our rooms up and they do the same. Then we trade off the knights because the more minor pieces we trade off, it will most likely be easier to pressure the pawn. You see we bring in the bishop, and oftentimes we must block the pawn from moving forward so they cannot trade it off. Now that all of their pieces are tied up on the pawn, we can shift our focus elsewhere and attack on the kingside.

Exchanging pieces is often good for exploiting pawn weaknesses. However, doubled pawns are a little harder because if there is a way for them to protect themselves if there is a pawn next to it. Even then, you do not need to take a double pawn to exploit, because if you block it up the pawn is essentially missing. That way, if material is even, you should have a pawn majority elsewhere to exploit. If it is doubled isolated pawns it is incredibly easy, because then it is an isolated pawn, only you have two targets, meaning they need to tie even more of their pieces down to the pawns

With backward pawns it is more about how the backward pawn cripples the structure and mobility of your opponent’s position. You can block it, use it as a shield, and it oftentimes locks their pieces in behind a closed center. You can the focus elsewhere, and if they get desperate enough to reactivate their pieces, you can damage their structure even further with doubled or isolated pawns.
