Life on other planets

Here is an interesting paper that support my long held position that we are likely the only advanced species in the universe -->  https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/08/03/a-new-reason-why-we-havent-found-alien-life-in-the-universe/

YOU can not be serious.  There are 10**23 stars in the universe.  May I ask how do you reason WE are the only advanced species ?  And what makes you think we are advanced;  LOOK AT ME !!!   In fairness to you , I DID NOT read your paper (washingpost).  But the major reason we do not find advance life is because THEY WIPE THEMSELFS OUT,  just as we are doing HERE.  Mostly by doing just what you are doing.

RPaulB

NOW I DID READ, here is what it said, just as I said.  "The Post reported in January on another one of his papers, we may be exceptional only because everyone else has already died."   Are you using religion in your reasoning ?

There are certainly a lot of things that make Earth special, so it's unlikely that a high percentage of planets have the right stuff for evolving life, let alone intelligent life.  Then there's the "High Tech Window", that quite possibly very short interval where civilizations are high tech enough to communicate with us but still haven't destroyed themselves or evolved so much that they cannot even relate to us.  Still, with all that, given the sheer numbers of planets, it seems to me there must be thousands, perhaps millions of civilizations at the right moment right now.  Unlikely there's even one though, that is close enough to be able to communicate with us in any way.  Except,of course, for the dozen or so alien species that are already living on or visiting Earth on a regular basis. (Disclaimer: not all of the above is my own opinion.  Some has been included to appease my more "enlightened" friends.)

Thanks for replying, I hope opiejames does too.  You said perhapes a million, that number is more like a million, million, million.  AND we are so unadvanced we still think C is the maximun velocity.  Gravitons get from earth to the center of our galaxy in 15 nanoseconds sometimes, not always at C or 50,000 years.   I do not add a disclaimer  to that.  Thus I am not so sure EARTH is special !!!

Let me ask you this. IF we are the only advanced living creatures in the universe and we only know 10% or less of it, you are saying we know the entire universe?? How naive can you be?? It is like an ant saying that his colony is the only insect life on Earth when it only discovered only 10% of the Earth or a bee colony saying that it is the only colony in the world after discovering only 10% or less of the entire Earth.

Either that or they have not contacted us or they have contacted us, but are being kept a secret to prevent a worldwide panic or they have the same or less technology than we do. It is IMPOSSIBLE that we are the only advanced living creatures in the universe, considering how vast it is. Anyone who says that we are the only living creatures in the entire universe is living in the dark ages or are ignorant. If the Sun can be formed with planets with life around it, other stars can also have planets with life on them. Some may even have two or more planets with life on them in the same system. Look at Star Trek. Those series had only shown two planets with life on them in the same system and there were many of them.

RPaulB

I hope you are not trying to prove WE are advanced living creatures !!!  Not even if we can write STAR TREK !!!!  (which I didn't of course)

Oh, you do have a point there. We are not advanced living creatures yet. We would be very primitive compared to other civilizations that can travel among the stars. The universe is about 14 billion years old and our solar system is only 4.5 billion years old. If the original poster believes we are the only "intelligent life," it would mean that the universe is a wasted space and that there is no meaning to the universe at all.

Like you, I am not sure what started this forum.  I do hope more members will answer.   The notes stated an interest in earth like planets.  That's nice, but to me there are a lot of other and more "interesting" things.  How can SPACE not be one of those.

viettrekkie20

Well, opiejames believes that we are the only "advanced lifeforms" in the entire universe, thinking that only 10% of it is the entire universe. It is like people believing in a flat Earth or the Earth is the center of the universe with the Sun orbiting it. LOL

That's fiction, with no basis in the scientific method.

RPaulB

ARE YOU saying there are not at least 10**18 earth like planets in the universe ?   OR ARE YOU saying that are no gravitons ?  OR ARE YOU saying gravitons can not go faster than a photon ?  OR you feel you are advanced ? OR ALL ARN'T TRUE ?  YOU just said I write FICTION.  PLEASE EXPLAIN IT .

I used to believe like you, until I read "Rare Eath".  They put up a convincing argument. (https://www.amazon.com/Rare-Earth-Complex-Uncommon-Universe/dp/0387952896).  Then I did more personal research on what type of stars can support life, the galactic habitable zone, etc.

I even read "What if we had no moon" to confirm that if we didn't have an abnormally large moon advanced life would be much less likely.  Do you know the weird way science believes we got our moon?  Do you know what would happen if our moon was much different?  This is just scraping the surface of why I believe the way I do.

No, I do not believe in the flat earth or the earth is the center of the universe.  However, I do believe in researching things when I want to have an educated opinion.  Have you done any research?

Nothing will convince me that we are alone in the universe. Think about it. Read my comment about knowing only 10% of the universe AND how vast it is. No, I do not need to research it because it will never convince me otherwise. I am very open-minded when it comes to this, not closed-minded. As for the types of stars that can harbor life, scientists are concluding that red dwarf stars are most likely to have planets with life because those stars can live for billions of years. Stars like our Sun have planets with life on them. It is impossible to think we are alone in the vastness of the universe. Again, you are thinking like the ant that thinks its colony is the only life on Earth.

RPaulB

Opiejames;  please what is your point ?   But I think I saw the comment that we are an advanced people.  You do not need a book for this question.  If you walk out side and ask every one  "why is there a universe ? "   you will get a different answer from every one you ask.  A DIFFERENT ONE !!  That is not an "advanced people" .  Is it ?   Of course you might get a lot of  " I don't know. "  and I did count that as not being advanced each time.  Or "GOD gave it to us",  but we knew that a longtime ago and we haven't "advanced" since then with that question.  And some what along the same line;  in the last 100 years there have been 100 NEW theories on gravity, 100 !  How can an advanced people have 100 different theories on gravity and any be RIGHT ?  So advanced could mean we are smarter than any thing else here.   But nothing to do with between planets.

viettrekkie20

The sad thing is that we are even arguing who is more intelligent on this planet!! LOL Dolphins, whales, pigs, etc are very intelligent creatures. One country has made dolphins people already!! I believe that was India, but I am not sure. If dolphins are considered people, pigs may become the next creatures to be considered people also. So, like many of us said, who says we are "advanced"?? We would be very primitive life, compared to the so much more advanced civilizations in the universe. Oh, btw, they had discovered planets around stars that had only hydrogen and helium, disproving the theory that stars can only have planets if the stars had heavier elements.

RPaulB

Sad, sad, sad.    And here, you and I can bearly fingure out who is least intelligent.   If I tell you that is not me, you may have just advanced !!!   SAD.   Do you see any thing from Elroch about FICTION ?    SAD again.

When you say that nothing will change your mind, it seems to me that by definition makes you close minded on any issue.
