Dear Mason,

Hi, it's Chiwon and thank you again for the great coach session(Sunday, Aug. 27th) before.

I have been playing 5 min Blitz games, following your suggestion, to deal with my time problem and I think it's helped me greatly in making faster and better moves. Now I mostly play 5 min blitz games. Of course I lose almost every time even though my games' opponent rating setting is set to not exceed +100 of my own and I still make blunder moves when I run out of time but I get the feeling I am winning some games from time to time.

Questions;

(I am not sure if the link works or the attached picture shows, but) Above is the 5min Blitz game I played just this morning(I play Black) and while studying it afterwards, computer says I missed a M3 here(move 31. Be3) and stupidly blundered my rook while trying to escape the bishop's attack. It took me a long time to figure out how the M3 worked in this situation. I made similar blunders like missing on M1, M2, M3 opportunities on several games, sometimes multiple times on a single game.

How can I get better at noticing and utilizing these chance (I say "chance" because I don't make these moves knowing that it is M1, M2, M3s) opportunities better if I ever get the chance in the future? Should I study making these chance opportunities or should I just stay focus on playing making less blunders?

P.S. I just found that my comment above is on the wrong designation in the forum but I don't know where I can attach the picture and ask questions. You can remove it whenever you want (or I will if you want) but would appreciate your comments on the issue nevertheless.

Hi!

I don’t mind where you post it, it’s alright. If you feel like you’re missing a lot of mates I would recommend doing more puzzles. Especially puzzles specifically targeted towards checkmating the opponent. Below is a link towards a page where you can customize which puzzles you want to focus on - filter by rating and type.

https://www.chess.com/puzzles/learning

I hope this helps, and good luck with your blitz!

Thank you! The link is great! I should really explore more learning materials in chess.com website. I didn't know there were so various learning interfaces here. I have been doing some puzzles in "daily puzzle" section but I think your link is better for studying specifics and generals overall.

Of course! I would also recommend the chess.com lessons, there’s a couple on checkmating.

https://www.chess.com/lessons/winning-the-game (Might be a little too basic, I’m not sure)

https://www.chess.com/lessons/finding-checkmate (Perfect for you)

https://www.chess.com/lessons/attacking-the-king-1 (More advances, still useful)

I would like to help coach. I am also interested in discussions with other coaches. For example, we have a whatsapp group for chess coaches with currently 53 members, which is dedicated to discussions on chess syllabus (esp. custom ones) and efficient training methods (e.g. woodpecker, spacing).
