Gerard Welling plays what I call the modern variation and Durkin plays the classic variation.
In the sodium attack classic variation (which I'll refer to as the Durkin open) generally plays as follows
After this point black will either develop the darksquare bishop or g-file knight (both used to control the center and open up for castling). Durkin avoided Bxa3 in playing the knight to c4 and adding another attacker to the e-file pawn which he continues to attack wither Nf3. The most common responses to Nf3 are either the f-file pawn, (offered as a gambit to gain a center majority and likely attack with the lightsquare bishop after d3 or d4.) just outright playing d3, d4, or castling.
Gerard Welling's Soduim attack (modern variation) can be described by the moves, 1. Na3 ... 2. c3 ...
White hopes to plant his knight in the c3 square, fianchetto his lightsquare bishop and prepare to put a firm grip over the d-file and make it a permanent strength. This often leads to very flexible position for his knight(s).
One of Gerard's greatest games ever played successfully (by this I mean won) is his 1996 game against Sandor Horvath.
