Idk if I would go so far as to say that it was "necessary" but the other options for ending the war weren't great: the alternative (for the US) would have been assembling troops for a larger land invasion of the main Japanese island, but considering the perils from battles like Iwo Jima and Okinawa, President Harry Truman elected to use the atomic bomb. It also allowed the US to assert dominance over the USSR. The project itself was really cool imo, Oppenheimer was an incredible scientist.
