Howdy Greenhorns,
As you're new to SCID you'll be wondering where all the lovely free GM game databases are. Well, as they don't come with the program, you're going to have to get creatin' and knock-up your own.
Helpfully, before any of you click "uninstall", there are libraries of games in PGN format which are just lying around, waiting for you to download them, for free(!!). So get cracking.
The most popular DB downloads are:
Norm Pollock's Collection
The Massive 1.74 million Game DB (Once upzipped, prepare thyself for a whopping 192mb of chess knowledge to be unleashed upon your hard drive.)
Both of which should be supplemented/updated with issues of New in Chess, and This Week in Chess (Download the "PGN" option - which is the "x" in box 4 on the TWIC webpage).
If any of the SCID Elders in the group know of any better DBs going around then please reveal your secrets.
Until the next time I think of something beginner-ish, all the best,
Russell
