I know this is very unofficial so far, trying to change that but have to start somewhere. Also do you know who has control of the thunderbaychessclub@gmail.com address?
Meeting Minutes - Jan. 24th 2023

No idea maybe email them and ask? I have invited my friend Alex to join he is heavily involved in chess at many levels and would likely have valuable input on how to proceed hopefully he will accept. He is an admin for the "Northern Ontario Chess League" on Chess.com and seems to be a good dude. Hope that's cool with everyone.

Hey guys!! I'd say don't reinvent the wheel, but heck you guys are so far away it only makes sense to do so. I'd like to help out anyway I can. I was in Thunder Bay from around 2010-2016 and met some chess players there

A road trip is always fun - there's a big tournament in Duluth, August I believe. But start locally for sure, clocks, sets, maybe one serious game a week on your club night.

there is clocks!! I still have yet to master the clock myself so that is likely my next goal. Do we need to get some "chess score cards" or something? from very limited time watching tournament style play it looks like they jot down the moves. Is 30 minutes the time we should be using? I assume "Thunder Bay Chess Club" is the name we have adopted? Do we have a mascot? I vote Rhinoceros.

Thanks for the help Alex! I definitely don't want to reinvent the wheel. Problem is I don't know what has worked elsewhere and am just going forward with what the participants that have been coming out seem the most interested in.
We have lots of sets, could use more clocks but most players don't use them on our club nights. What do you mean by one serious game per week?
Also could you provide information on that tournament in Duluth? I would make the effort to go if everything works out.

Just whipped it up online.. Its cold out I was bored anywho the "gens Una Sumas" is FIDE's mantra. The Latin translates to "we are one family" thought it was pretty cool for a rough draft.

Funny when you plug it into Google translate it says 'We take the nation together'. Either way it makes sense. I'd like to replace our current logo with this one if you don't mind.

If you are playing 30 minutes, you can stop recording when you have less than 5 minutes left on your clock.

There was a tournament in Sault Ste Marie that used https://www.chessmanager.com/ to do the pairings

Easiest is to have a club ladder. Each week challenge the person above or below you, and move up and down accordingly. That's the one serious game with at least 30mins per player.

Found this link to the Duluth/Superior club
First of all I would like to thank everyone that stuck around to discuss the club and potential events going forward.
I can't create an attendees list as I still don't know everybody yet, a good problem to have!
Item 1: Andrew mentions position of club leader/host should be an elected one. Brandon responds by electing him, Andy seconds the motion. Andrew to assume the role upon Brad's departure.
Item 2: Foundry is interested in hosting an event. Andrew followed-up with the manager on duty Tuesday evening regarding this, Thursday evenings was suggested. Andrew suggested to the manager that they should be able to host a bring your own board event without needing our support, but we of course would let our members know it is happening. Support by supplying adjudicators may be considered.
Item 3: Several potential events listed, most buy-in was a simultaneous. Need a location, host, date, prizes, and fee structure.
Item 4: Official CFC events were met with disdain due to membership fees. Unofficial in house events of similar format however were mentioned as a possibility.
Item 5: Andy mentioned hosting unofficial tournaments at his camp.
I suggest we repeat discussions like this on a monthly basis. Since this one happened on the third Tuesday of the month, I propose the next one be on Feb. 21st.
