Some clubs like a pyramid instead.  Like a pegboard with one at the top level, 2 players at the second level, 3 at the third etc.  A player still plays someone one level above or below them, but it makes for more options of who to play.

Thanks Alex! The ladder idea is a good one. I'll propose it for the following Tuesday this upcoming Tuesday. Give people an idea of when to sign-up. We typically run 6-8pm. @ForeverForwardGuy do you think starting the tournament @7:30 so it runs no later than 8:30 would work for most people?

My current idea is this 6-7:15, casual drop in chess. 7:15-7:30 pairings for those who want to participate in the tournament, ladder tournament game 7:30-8:30. Anyone who doesn't want to participate in the tournament can continue playing casual chess.

I missed the pyramid post as it was on the next page. That's worth a shot as well. I am a little worried that with the ladder style we will end up with the same pairings week in, week out. I can see how a pyramid would prevent that.

I am still of the opinion that we should probably leave Tuesdays as a free for all where people can practice what they like and play how they feel. Any sort of tournament stuff should probably be a sign up event on a different day ? I don't want to scare away beginners and newcomers on Tuesday's by being overly complicated. Tuesdays should be more of the core members welcoming and teaching/having fun with beginners newcomers stragglers etc? It seems like we are trying to put too much into a single night and we still need to figure out the level of interest? I dunno my two cents
