As expected, Nc6 is winning in a land slide. Let's go over his possible resonses

8. a3

8. cxd5

8. dxc6

or any other novelty you are aware of.

8. a3 has the obvious response of Bxc3 (and it will be nearly impossible to get votes for anything else). However, at the very least for discussion purposes, Ba5 is interesting in that it leads the game in a profoundly different direction. Black may get the IQP, and essentially dumps the queen-side for a quick attack against the king. Here is an example (albeit a little dated)

8. a3 Bxb3 has a number of variation, and I have widdled them down to only include those where we move the top move in the database (which is how voting is going... and since these options are very distal we can discuss them later). One of the main moves crossroads is what white does with his LSB after 8. a3 Bxc3 9. bxc3 dxc4 10. Bxc4 Qc7. 11. Bd3 can lead to an other IQP structure for white after 11... e5 12. Qc2 Re8 13. e4 c4 14 Bxc4 exd4 15. cxd4 Na5 16. Bd3 Qxc2 17. Bxc2 Nxe4. 11. Bg5 a6 12 Bd3 ends up looking rather similar. Ba2 and Bb2 generally keep the motif of black having a strong queen side and white maintaining the center. Here is a sample game for example.

@laskerfan - right now I see this as discussion and not debate, and an excuse to study up and make myself a little better for future nimzo games... so I hope nothing heated comes up, but opinion is welcome

also, there is the possibility that we must prepare for 8. cxd5 exd5 9. dxc5 Bxc5, in case he wants us to have the IQP.

What abou 8. a3 cxd4 (?!) ?

I know I probably missed a LOT, but all I'm trying to say is that, unless I missed a very easy refutation to 8. .. cxd4, we might (still) get a piece for a piece and force him to get into the trouble of freeing his DSB again.

andrewlong

Don_Fusili - that isnt too bad of a position (it would continue dxc4 Bxc4, and their DSB is stuck for a while but so is our LSB)... however I think a better response from white is 9. exd4 which takes us into another IQP game after 9... dxc4 10. Bxc4 Be7, similar to if we played 7...cxd4

I am surprised at how huge the majority for the mainline is. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Later an obvious (but awful) move may surge to a massive lead. Smile

Interesting how we have our personal preferences. I have played the Nimzo quite a lot, and I have virtually never played d5 lines like this, but I grit my teeth and accept it is probably sound.

@elroch... yes... its going to be interesting to have to include in analysis later on something like "move X is clearly best, but it leaves us with the obvious but awful move Y next turn which will probably win the votes instead of the better move Z... so maybe we should take a different route" ... im not really that pessimistic though

you are right in that it may be a good thing... maybe the people who dont have time/desire to look into the candidate moves look at the database now for their move, but once the database is gone will look briefly to a suggestion or two in the comments... then the team just needs to keep a good saturation of posts suggesting the best move
