What about free PDFs of these availaible online I know some are piracy but I have lots of them

You make the call, it's your ethics. Personally, if I was an author who was pirated, I would prosecute to the full extent of the law. www.takedownpiracy.com

I was a commercial photographer in NYC. I worked from age 12 to age 18 in order to be able to start my business while going to art school (to help pay for art school). By age 28, I had done magazine covers, advertising, Polaroid used my 4x5 photos to sell their products,  traveled the country photographing musicians, authors, actors, e.t.c.

I also had gallery shows and curated gallery shows in NYC.

Then,  at age 28 I was hit by a car.

Three years afterwards I had a famous drummer ask to use my photos just for personal use: we signed a contract. He used them online, on his DVDs, e.t.c.  He didn't think I had the money to sue. So I gave the photos to my stock photo agency and THEY sued him. And I got paid more than I would have charged him if he had simply asked.

You reap what you sow.

I'm with you 100%, Coach-Bill--

Don't steal other people's hard earned work.

Coach-Bill,

On a lighter note,  I wanted to add that there are many great chess books available on SCRIBD. There's a yearly fee, but for folks like me with limited income, after the first month it's paid for itself.

Scribd.

Articles, books, audio books, e.t.c.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips Coach Bill.

About the usage of db's. What's the point of always playing the best move according to the db? Most of my corr games are played where each player playes the move with the best winning percentage. Often without understanding why the move is played. I do this myself because I don't dare playing something else. And often, when the book moves are exhausted, we have a position which neither of us understands! What to do instead?

This is where books and chess savvy come in. You don't always play the move with the best percentage, you narrow things down and look at the sidelines and see if you like the types of positions arising. Everyone runs out of book lines eventually and you are on your own. time to dig in even more analyzing the position.

Coach Bill can you recommend a good tactics book that explains all the various tactics, or at least most of then?  I know about pins, skewers, forks, double attacks, discovered attack, discovered attack with check, removing the guard, and the overworked piece.

I haven't played for 20 years.  I remember some of the patterns for pins, skewers, forks, and double attacks, but can't recall wgat to look for to find the other various tactics when playing a game.

Try the one I learned with, but it's in English Descriptive notation.

Winning Chess. By Chernev and Reinfeld.

Lol, I used to have that book, but it seems out of print and hard to find, now.  That was the best chess book I ever had!

After studying that book over and over and over, my chess game went to a whole new level.

A modern book about tactics, which got good reviews, is "Understanding Chess Tactics". It explains all tactics themes. The book is also available at Chessable: https://www.chessable.com/chess-tactics-from-scratch-understanding-chess-tactics/course/27821/

Once I have decided what move I want to make is there any reason to wait or should I just move right away ?

I depends on how fast you want the game shall proceed. If you have several games going on, you maybe want to spread out the moves on several days. It all depends on how much time you have for chess per day and how much time you spend on each move.

I just wanted to stress how good “How to Reassess Your Chess “ is, this book took me from beginner to a 1600 player that is on his way up! It’s awesome! If you only buy one chess book in your life, it’s the one!
