I have friends who like chess variants, and I have a 3d printer. I've printed all the chess pieces, all the fairy chess pieces on chess.com, and some custom fairy chess pieces using my 3d printer. I've printed several chess boards, some portable some not, and in the travel sets, I have fewer kinds of fairy pieces and instead have cards with moving instructions that I match to a type of piece. More common fairy pieces like archbishops or chancellors still have dedicated pieces, but less commonly used ones like the Alibaba-rider or the Xiangqi horse have cards, and we just assign a kind of "blank" fairy piece to them whenever they're used.

How so? Kings can move in any direction, having them not be royal just makes them more useful…
queens would be better
